I still keeping my 21 year-old Proton SAGA 1.3s, Manual Transmission, although I've other cars as well.

I can testify that this Proton SAGA has a very reliable Mitsubishi engine, never broke down on me, not even once.

I still remember driving it through-out the WHOLE NIGHT from Kota Baru Kelantan (4.30pm) all the way to State of Perak via East-West Highway : Jeli (8.30pm) --> Tasik Banding (Midnight@1.00am) --> Grik (2-3am) --> Kuala Kangsar --> Ipoh (5.00am) --> Tg. Malim (7.00am) without any single problem.

Been driven to many parts of Malaysia as well, like Johore, Malacca, Pahang (Kuantan, Fraser Hills, & Cameron Highlands (many times), Perak, Kedah, & Perlis (Wang Kelian & Padang Besar). Not a single problem too.

IMHO, it all depends on routine check-ups, repairs, & maintenance. Spare parts are plenty & cheap. You can also DIY.

Yes, I've to admit that Proton SAGA common problem is rusty doors & power windows. Well, it does not prevent the car from running anyway.

Power window problem ?: I changed power windows to manual units from breaker yard & it cost me about RM30.00. It will last forever.

Door skin rusty ?: I replaced the door skin & it cost me about RM60.00/pc x 4. Then get them sprayed; now it looks good. It will last for few years, at least.

Yes, my SAGA is getting old, but very faithful & good companion; no matter day-time or night-time drives. Just turn-on the ignition & it runs. Never brakedown & seemed to better than my 4x4 (which let me stranded in the middle of the night at remote area) produced by the so-called global manufacturer boosting for reliability & costing me close to RM100K for its vehicle.

I think we have to define the word 'unreliable' before going any further. DEWI is right, although the body is rusting, the mechanical still runs well...

To me, unreliable is like an old Lancia... you can't even drive it to work with a peace of mind coz it can die on you any time...
