Meg's backing plate female thread size is M14, the older ones are M16. Same goes with polishing machine, newer models now comes with male M14 and older ones are M16. There shouldn't be any problems even if the size are either one as you can easily get an adapter for them. But it would be more convenient if both are with the same thread size. I'd suggest you get some info on them from the particular seller before your doing purchase.

My 2 cents is that I also was looking at the skill at one time. But what made me decide is the 1000rpm start speed. I still think its too high. So I decided to by my china rotary. My china rotary I would say isn't too bad. Not the brand that has been previously mentioned. Its called Astro. It came in a nice box and with wool and black finishing pad and 6.5" backingplate. I think it was from a taiwan company which bought the RB from china.
Starting from 500-600rpm is a real plus point, you wont miss this feature until you have used it and then asked to use one with 1000rpm. Then you will say yes its better to buy 500-600rpm.
But all in all if you have the money Makita is the way to go. Will buy one once my China gives way.
P.S. for all you China RB users I opened up the head of the my RB and put high temp grease inside. The original grease is rubbish. Also lubed the rear bearing for the motor as well. Currently no problems with my china RB in low RPM for prolonged use even when the motor and head gets hot.

Some other tips is if your are trying to get the grease into a sealed bearing like behind the motor, you can use a syringe and force it into the gap. If still cannot go in, then have to use it with a syringe and needle. But don't buy the super fine needle lah. If the grease too think you can mix a batch of grease in a small container and add wd40 to thin in down slightly so it will flow better.
The grease also helps to quieten down the noise of the head as well.
I use high temp wheel bearing grease which smells like manual gearbox oil as it has the Extreme pressure additives inside.

Waxing is best done by hand
Nothing beats giving some TLC to the paint job without a machine getting involve
