Hi all, I am new to Volvo. I am eyeing the new S40.

Likes:
1. Sturdy built ( I so love the studiness compared to Sonata and Mazda.)
2. Lots of safety features (especially for a lady with kids.)
3. It is a VOLVO! (the only I could afford right now.)

Dislikes:
1. Tight spaces at the back passenger seat and smaller boot size compared to the likes of camry and accord! (Oh, they are so common though they do have their upsides I must admit.)
2. No Front sensor (This could help in avoiding nags from the better men.)
That's about it!

The purpose of my posting here is to ask what am I getting myself into in terms of

a. fuel consumption,
b. cost of maintaining it in the long run (are there common hic-cups baring the unforeseen ones or any issues I should look our for?) and
c. should I service it at 10,000 k interval instead of following the suggested 20,000km interval.
d. any recommendation of reputable service shops once the warranty period is over?
e. I normally drive at the fastest 120km/hr and used to drive a hyundai accent (which has good pickup and reasonable power by my standard), will the pick up and power be at least equal or better?

Please advise.

Not much comment if you like this car, it a good car but to me it is underpowered aliitle to my liking.
Their service interval is 25,000 km (correct me if I am wrong) I would suggest to do it at every 7,500km if you intent to keep it for long time, if 2-3 years, then just follow their schedule cos the next owner can suffer on your behalf for your 25k kms servicing cost. BUt if you want to "Volvo for Life", I think do interim service earlier is adviceable.
I have a 30+ yrs - Volvo for Life - or Half now to me at least hahaha.'

if you only drive at 120km then any car is ok, but i think you will drive fasster when you drive a S40 for sure!
after warranty service - I used Volcar (Jerry) and V pro (Kelvin)

Just my 2 cts,

Cheers!

I agree with Bro BR1 on his suggested service interval. Although it mention 25K km, but just do it outside @ 7.5K km or 10K km. Just need to take care of it from the beginning so that dont give headache later. Just like our body, if we take care from young, later no sakit here & there when gets old. Bear in mind, Volvo is a conti car, maintenance will be higher compare to Japanese cars if using daily, but once you drive a conti, you'll love it.

As for the outside workshop, I saw one behind Caltex stn in TTDI, heading towards TTDI, dunno whether it's the same as mentioned by Bro BR1 here.

Yes, "Volvo for Life", if you take cares of it. Good luck!!!

Just my personal opinion.... fing30.gif

Think you are referring to new S40 2.0 powershit , right ? althought this model is not my cup of tea, but basically all Volvo's are design with same intention = safery. so it's consider a good car when safety are priority to you..

let's me share some inform with you...

a) feul comsuption - this car are built to mostly city drive with occasionally for interstate travel, with non turbo engine with 6 speed power shit, the fuel comsuption will be good with low on both city/interstate travel, unlike those turbo model Volvo's that are only good with low feul comsuption on interstate travel but not on in town driving..

b.) now Volvo car Malaysia offer with 5 years warranty + 5 year maintenance free package, so you will consider with zero maintenance ownership for first 5 years and this car for sure will still survive for another 1 or 2 years time with low maintenace bills until when it reached it designed life spend by 7-8 years old.. that's when the most major parts are require replacement.. so plan your ownership carefully.

c) Is good thinking to performace 10000km interval service instead of manufacture interval service of 20000km as this model is non turbo therefore with 10000km service schedule are still good enough to keep the car in tip top condition that unlike turbo models that will generated lots of wear & tear for engine, gearbox, drivetrain and cooling system.

d) Think you will only need to ask this question when it is by 5 years of your ownership of the car as many thing can be happen between the period..but dont worry much on the after warranty service as there is many good & reliable Volvo workshops outside there, but one time for sure you need to look for those that have Volvo computer software (Vida/Dice) that able to dignostic your car problem's correctly. otherwise those with blindly trouble shooting on your car problems will be very very costly on your wallet.

e) To be honestly, with around 145bhp with about 1.5 tons car kerb weigh , you can't expected much performance on this car, BUT with 6 speed powershit + good handling, i'm sure you will enjoy this car much much better than Hyundai Accent in all aspects.....ask me how i know........cause i was Hyundai owners(Couple) before i swift to Volvo.

or you can log on this link for more detail of the car

So good luck on your new ownership of Volvo...like others said .."Volvo For Life"

IPD HD Ignition Coil, IPD 25mm Front Sway Bar. UR Custom 23mm Rear Sway Bar. UR Front & Rear Strut Bars. Stainless Steel Brake Hoses. Audi TT DV, Saab 900 ATF Cooler. A good car for your use, but really have to manja it from start or else the later parts of repairs & maintenance is very painful to the wallet. Dont follow their service schedule! pay now for a little extra to do extra earlier service and save alots later down the road 5-6 yrs later. That's my advice! especially the engine, parts are rea expensive, did an overall for an old volvo for about RM10k - just to keep it running for sentimental value and collection.

our whole family went to test drive a S40 and a Golf Tsi at glemarie FA wagon, and we all finally sign on the spot for a Golf Tsi, but if your fastest drive is 120km/hr, you will like the S40 very much - and maybe dont test drive a TSi before you change your mind like us, hahahaha - Cheers!

i think those 10k, 15k, 20k km service interval apply to 4 season country as most of the time cool weather and not much air pollution as in bolehland.

tpl & TSIJetta & br1: I thank you for your opinion indeed. It further reiterates that I have to do the 10k km interval service. Thank you for the service shop contacts. I intend to look after the car beautifully!

br1: Now I am tempted to test drive the Golf GTi! What do you like about the Golf compared to the S40? Who in your family will be driving it? I have driven the Golf sedan in London (rented one) and it is beautiful but sadly it is not sold here. Anyone knows if it is coming to our shore soon, this Golf sedan?

V406198: Yes, I am referring to the new powershift S40 2.0 petrol version. And you have given me a much greater insight into Volvo. You have indeed. But the car does not come with the 5 year free service! Only comes with 5 years warranty. Which is your preferred volvo btw .. just curious! Hope I didn't kill any feline!

Two more questions dear forumers:

1. Which VOlvo centre is preferred to purchase and for later servicing? Glenmarie? Swedish Marque? Seputeh Volvo?

2. What about spare parts? Are they difficult to come by?

Who in your family will be driving it? all my sons, daughter in law, my wife and myself - we all love it!

What about spare parts? Are they difficult to come by? - easy and available, but a little pricy but if you have been using a continental car b4 you will get used to the price if not it a big pinch! however it is more lasting in use.

Golf sedan? U mean Jetta? If it is then luck its on your side. Check out the link below.

As for Golf itself I always tell forumers not to buy as current Golf so called MK6 is based on MK5 platform and more like a major facelift MK5.5 rather than MK6. Bear in mind all-new Golf will be introduced in 2012 which is next year. Go for Jetta or S40.

You meant Golf GTI or TSi ( Golf 1.4TSi is Mk6 as what they claimed) you meant also in 2012 all-new entirely?
