Hi Guys
I've been driving an auto car for many years now and I find that i'm very used to stepping on the brakes to slow down. I know that we can slow down by down shifting the gear. Will this have any effect on the gearbox? Which is better to do?

depends on the following scenario:-

use engine braking if:-
- entering or coming to a stop FAST from a very high speed.
- controlling speed down a hill instead of using the brakes all the way to prevent brake overheating.
- preventing skidding on very slippery surface for example muddy roads.

For some cars there is a winter switch for this..... smile_thumbup.gif

My wife's Chery have it. Saw on Bestari (Pug) 206 also. Almost same as Sports mode in some. Actually delay the gear shifting so that it is in low gear which is good for slippery surface..... smile_thumbup.gif

Once, I drove my friend's Volvo V70 and accidentally pressed the winter switch... suddenly the car became slow and sluggish... like very lazy to move.

Upon returning the car, I told my friend about the car's lack of response. He noticed a 'W' sign lights up in the meter and said I have switched on the winter mode.... that's why it was slow... he he.. silly me smile_blush.gif
