Generally choosing a 5 years old car over the brand new one for similar specs and price is quite mad. Unless you really like the car or the the car is much cheaper and it hold value significantly better than Proton.

To be honest, i can't think of any extra value that Sentra offer over Proton. No matter japanese or local, 5 years old is about time to do some extra repair. My opinion is if you worried of Proton, there are a lot of other choices which i think it is better than Sentra. For some who appreciate driving, Gen-2 CPS manual is a way to go...

I agree. What does the Sentra offer over a brand new proton Gen2? Having recently bought a new Proton (last year) I say their quality has improved much since the days of Wira and Waja. If you compare your Gen-2 to a Camry hig end segment of course will lose and not fair. Try comparing the Proton model segment with a similar Jap segment and you'll see the differences become less.

A 5 years car will need some repairs and normal wear and tear items due for replacement eg brake disc, maybe exhaust etc, with a brand new car you won't have to worry about any of that for at least 3-4 years.

So far in my ownership of the new Proton only once I had to claim the warranty - faulty AC sensor.

madex and newkelisa,
both of you are missing the point. The sentra has lost almost 40% of its new price after 5 years. So you are getting a good value for your money. Remember that the new Sentra 1.6 SGL costs over RM90k back in 2006! If you compare price alone is not really apple to apple. Yes the Proton new is cheaper but when you compare them when they were new, the Sentra is perhaps better in quality and other technical aspects.

Not all brand new car especially from Proton will be trouble-free,some will have issues but then again malaysia have no consumer rights.

NOPE, poster only said the car price is not the factor.....

mzi, why flash back comparing Sentra if it new? Wake up! Doesn't matter....when the Sentra selling at RM90k, i am not sure it was good value. So 40% less after 5 years still is kind of expensive. Then not all japanese trouble free.....

Hey! You have almost analysis out all the pro & con. All you need to do is choose which is more relevant to you. As there is no perfect choice in this world.

If the car is just a transportation to you. Go for new Proton and "probably" enjoy initial years trouble free ride (well, it might not be true but at least covered by warranty).

If you concern about fuel costs (in long run), manual is always tend to be fuel saving.

If you talk about riding joy, go for japs. There are definitely different worlds. Have you ever thought of what if after 3 years ? 8 years Sentra and 3 years Proton?

So, which is matter to you?

I would choose my uncle Sentra if i just need transportation for few year.

Sorry mate, i never felt cheap japs offer joy of riding... They normally offer 2 kind of ride. Superb numb steering feel and floating ride OR good steering respond but shakin ride. But if you meant that kind of feel, yes, there are definately different kind of worlds altogehther.... smile_big.gif

(Resend...)

Hello young brader, have you buy the car yet ?

When you compare Gen 2 (look sporty & what you looking for) and Sentra (just bcoz is your uncle's car and family type), just go follow your gut feeling....proton not bad and easy to maintain, if want to look as family car , go Persona la brader... no regret.

If you just drive around town, why border fuel consumption, not worth...

End, you make yr own decision, don't forget bank int.rate 2nd hand car is higher than new one.

I think Proton is a very good car. I like the interior especially the meter and gear knob and the quality of material is better and no minor or major problem within 2-3 years like suspension, lights, power window etc.

I agree. My colleage's older sentra had engine overheat problem and had replaced with second hand engine. Now the engine isn't that smooth and still could'nt solve the problem. May be its his luck. But he said the ride is much better than his wife's Myvi.
