Sepang International Circuit to be home grand prix for three teams
With three Formula 1 teams 'carrying' the Malaysian flag, the 2011 Petronas Malaysia Formula One Grand Prix from April 8 to 10, is set to be a big hit with local fans.
There will be three teams with strong Malaysian interest, making the Sepang round as the home Grand Prix for three F1 teams - Mercedes GP Petronas, Lotus Renault and Team Lotus.
"Apart from their sponsorship of the Mercedes GP Team, Petronas is again the title sponsor for the event. The Lotus Renault team has the backing of Proton and Lotus Group while Team Lotus has the support of Datuk Seri Tony Fernandes and his Tune Group," said SIC chief executive officer Datuk Razlan Razali in a statement on Thursday.
"It's definitely something unimaginable when Malaysia first started F1 not too long in 1999. Imagine how much the sports have progressed and the massive impact that it has given Malaysia, the automotive industry and the country as a whole.
Razlan said it was not just in terms of the international mileage but also revenue generated by the service sector, especially the tourism-related businesses.
The 2011 F1 season is set to create history as the 20-round championship will see seven of them in Asia, including the opening round to be hosted by Bahrain from March 11 to 13.
"Personally, I am really looking forward to this year's edition of the Malaysian Grand Prix. I am sure millions of other Malaysians as well. They will have plenty to cheer for on April 10 in Sepang," said Razlan.
For this year's edition, SIC hopes to woo some 100,000 fans for the race.
"Last year, we had massive local support for both the 'Malaysian' teams - Mercedes GP Petronas and the Lotus Racing - and this year, there will be another local team for Malaysians to cheer, the Lotus Renault. It should be a fantastic weekend," said Razlan.
In achieving the target, Razlan said SIC was currently offering a 50% discount on tickets purchased, to give fans, especially Malaysians, an opportunity to experience the race live at the circuit.
"It's a special way for us to celebrate the 13th edition of the Malaysian F1 Grand Prix. So, this year we are offering the most affordable tickets for the fans to enjoy the race. If you purchase now, you could get tickets for as low as RM30," he said.
Razlan, who is the event director for the 2011 F1 Malaysian Grand Prix, added that the special early bird promotion which provides seats at Hill stands K2, C1 and C3 at RM30 are only valid for purchases before end of the month.
Razlan said SIC's aggressive on-ground promotions would start with a one-month long F1 Carnival in March to hype up the event.
"Naturally, we would be working closely with our key partners in promoting the event with special programmes that we will be announcing later. I am sure that Petronas, Proton and Tune Group will also be having their own programmes as well to take advantage of their home race in Sepang," added Razlan.
