Here are my SOPs:

For town driving (at low speed):

1 I tend to just use the brakes to slow down or stop at traffic lights or junctions
2 I will change down if I am doing a Uturn and expect to accelerate after the Uturn
3 If I am driving an auto car, I leave the gear level at D

For downhill driving (e.g. Genting/Karak, Jelapang):

1 I will downshift to slow down and keep the car on low gear. This saves me from controlling throttle and brakes - not so smooth
2 On auto cars, I will shift down manually too

One other thing that I do is to use Dot 4 synthetic brake fluid. This will have a higher boiling point and will resist brake fade better.

Brake fade have very little to do with the brake fluid, more to brake pads as this will over heat first then only brake fluid.... smile_tongue.gif

For town driving (straight road), engine braking is not required hence when slowing down (just before reach junction and traffic light), just smooth foot braking will do. And for manual, depress clutch pedal only when you need to stop your vehicle (to prevent engine stalling when in gear) or downshifting (esp. when making U-turn and accelerate).

When descending (eg Genting), the most effective way to slow down is the combination between engine braking and foot braking. When i going downhill from Genting, the selection between 2 and 3rd gear was largely depends to the road contour (also depends to the weather coz sometimes it was foggy) and some foot braking (no need to step on throttle). Apart from engine braking, when approaching the bumps even from quite a distance, foot braking was applied earlier so that i can brake smoothly. Same technique applies to the automatic cars when going downhill ( selection between 'D3'/switch off 'OD' or '2')

However, when driving down from Genting, a short stop-by at Gohtong Jaya is a good idea to reduce (if not prevent) the chances of brake overheating/fade.

As long as not high revs.....safer to slow down. Use both brakes and gear to slow on long downhill stretches.... smile_thumbup.gif

ya... may be is it apply to hill road. As normal street drive I don't really use engine brake.

note: as per topic said this is base on an auto gear box.

yeah..better just glide (change to neutral earlier and let the car rolls when going to stop at red light) smile_thumbup.gif

in slow2 rolling traffic jams or stop-n-go situation i would press the throttle as little as i could only enuf to keep an almost steady pace with the stop n go traffic condition....(no need to follow stupid stop n go over a few centimeters)...so the driver behind also not panic when brake/accelerate and result would be smoother flow of traffic even it was a slow moving one..... smile_thumbup.gif

(*actually i hate driver infront who urge/do sudden accelerate/brake..because it was only tiring yourself+consume more fuel+stress the tranny and brake+making traffic flow not smooth=not going anywhere at all) laugh.gif

There are all sorts of driver lah! This morning Federal Highway was jam because of burning car. After passing the car, traffic is smoother, but this Mercedes S500 was impatient. Signal into my lane (fast), so I let him in. But fast lane still slow because of heavy traffic, then he cut left and left and speed off on the emergency lane...... smile_shock.gif smile_blackeye.gif

Problem at Federal Highway stretch from Avon to Sungei Way, sometimes police allow to use emergency lane when jam is bad.
I dare not use as don't know when can use and when cannot, because sometimes I see police summons some of them..... smile_shock.gif
