new forum member, and a old kaki PV6 over here.
Good my perdana back in 2004- as need to get rid of that stupid Honda Civic 94' 1.6 (turtle)
The civic was my first car ( or curse) 2nd year into working and wanted to be gaya.
wat i had was series of night mare....
To be frank, it might not be the car but the previous few owners (din know, 2nd car dealer manipulated me).
The car was laden with series of problem, clutch pump, gasket, tyre bearing, alternator pulley, anthena and so on so on.
The pulley is one of the worst as breaks down on my trip to Genting.
The ECU was bloody costly and the car was down for a week coz hard to find part.
Basically i need to get something repaired once every 2 month average. Was counting my days every month to see if any breakdown tat month or not. after finished the 3 years installment- decided to change my ride.
My budget was around 80k and stretch to rm 100k. Choices was down to either nissan sentra and the cool PV6...
I think back now- do i regret? No.
Has my car aged? all car aged! Do i prefer an '04 sentra or '04PV6 in my garage... definitely PV6 without doubt.
Why i like it so much... the all black interior with leather seat- which i still not get bored with it.
The neat white dial dash board matching proper with leather wrapped stearing wheel.
And the shear power and respond when u floor the accelarotor... The V6 engine is just music to the ear.
Ok, the music sound nicer when it was new, - i regularly rev it to 5-6000 rpm back then. Com'on- it is a waste and disgrace if such engineering not put to the use.
i have not mod the car even a little bit- except changing the player to USB type, and the speakers as KOed recently. and nope, din add the AT cooler.
The car had clocked abt 140k, so far still not issue/breakdown except for the started which failed 3 months ago.
GB still ok (touch wood), but if in traffic light from neutral to drive- need to give it a micro second for it to engage, else it will slip. May be some trouble brewing but been like that for more than 2 years already.
Of course, gear change also not as smooth, so need to pedal-adjust it accordingly.
another sad thing discover recently is that it is leaking water, something. carpet (below the dust mat) is wet after heavy rain. So, may be it is time to bid good bye, probably next year.
Currently considering Tucson, but the engine noise and vibration at 3500 rpm above is really rough, by comparison.
Whatever happened. I will have good memories with this car.... which had served me well these years.

I sold my 2001/2002 PV6 because...
1) It's aging (mine is even older than yours but well, it's my choice to keep the car isnt't it?) (me too.. 1999 v6 1st model with alfadana facelift)
2) Maintenance cost (genuine parts are expensive, cheap local parts don't last long) (Parts are on the high side but certain items can be sourced from kedai potong eg the driver door locking mechanism died on me 3 years ago. I got a used set still inside a potong door kept under a shed for RM80. Got the power window buttons woth door handle and DOOR LOCK button for RM50 only) (spare part?? last time yesss.. i thought very expensive.. then i knew a guy who supply perdana parts to spare parts shop. very cheap... reliable.. established BRAND.. sammore got warranty)
3) Already do 200,000km mileage (did 1 top overhaul, 2 timing-belt change, suspension, radiator, air-con, etc.) (I've done two full timing belt changes, 1 top overhaul and changed the front absorbers twice and once for the rear. Mileage is now 223,300. The top overhaul really took care of the asthmatic feel as mileage got closer to 180K kms) (me too... 70% overhauled at 134,000km.. even piston also change maaa.. 1st three years very extreme... my mistake also la.. didn't notice water jacket broken..hehehe... now already 215,000++ km.. still running and good condition)
4) Gearbox problems (gear change slip on up-shifting, jerky on downshift - I do manual and regular maintenance periodically and keep records till the end) (I don't have any GB problems yet. Always changed the ATF at 20K interval. Gear changes are still reasonably smooth for the mileage done) (actual car age 10 years.. i bought 2nd hand almost 7 years ago.. so far no GB problem. got 1 time when shift to 'D' position, the gear engaged for 1 second then slip.. (free gear..). straight away flush the ATF and change to new one.. until now still ok. jerking?? yeah... but what we expect 10years same GB.. not da same as brand new. already install oil cooler. some perdana owner advised me to use TOYOTA ATF for prolong a GB shelf life. will change it very soon...)
5) Service at Proton (expensive, but the car is in good lasting conditions) (I never bothered to service at Proton after the warranty expired. My regular mechs can do a similar good job when they have a MUT Tester handy) (i simply go to any workshop for engine oil servicing.. for other servicing or changing parts.. i'll go to regular workshop in Kota Damansara)
6) Safety wise..., "no airbags", traction control, etc. (agree, but this is early 90s technology. Potong Eterna units have at least one airbag but Proton chose not to have it on PV6) (agreed!!)
7) A bit heavy on FC (Fuel Consumption) as it ages (not really.. i've been getting more or less the same mileage till now. Used to have problems running Petronas RON95 but solved when I changed brand to ESSO RON95)

ABS light on....means ABS got some problem and your car's ABS might now be working properly already. Or maybe just fuse problem? Or the sensor at four wheels, either one got problem also maybe...
