Dear All,

I have tried and tested thoughts about changeing my Xsara from Auto to Manual. So far, Im still toying with that idea until I find a good specialist who can do the job....anyway, my reson for this posting is to find out with all members if you have any idea where to install ATF Cooler (oil intercooler). I was told by a mechanic that if I don't get it installed, prepare to bid farewell to my gearbox. At the very moment, he tested the car and the gearbox is faultless. I took over the car from a friend of mine and it only clocked 50Kkm, so in another words its underuse. My friend whom is a professional and really took care of the car, changing the ATF every 15k or 6 month, which is a good practice. But is it true that if without the ATF cooler the gearbox will KO? If true, where can I get one? My mechanic quoted RM1k....

The ATF cooler is to improve the cooling of ATF instead of using the original cooling system.
Overheated ATF will decrease yr GB performance and if it continues like that, it will KO yr GB.
Changing ATF every 15kkm is too much (ATF changing is quite expensive also)
I always change ATF every 45kkm or every after 3 times oil change.
Yes, ATF cooler is about RM1k++.
Where is yr location?

There's this Hayden ATF cooler selling in Mudah for about RM280. Would that fit the Xsara/Xsara Picasso?

If you DIY, need to find a place for it. My friends did DIY for a few car makes already. Best is up front next to radiator so can get air flow....

Installing ATF cooler is not that difficult in general. As suggested, it best to install it in front, but note that this in turn will reduce airflow efficiency for the other 2 behind it (air cond condenser and engine coolant radiator), this reduction is usually small enuf to be ignored. Usually the fans can take up the additional load caused by the additional restriction in airflow introduced by the ATF (or whatever extra was installed). Its more of finding a place to fit it.

I assuming you already have the ATF adapter plate to pipe the ATF fluid out from your AL4 GB. If not, you will need one. You will have to get someone to machine it for you. Its not openly sold, yes, it is a made to order thing. Not difficult to machine, but difficult to find someone to make it for you if you do not know these things or not a hands one person.

Installing ATF cooler issue can be easily solve. I think the issue that you are trying to address here is the heat generated by the AL4 GB (all GB generates them anyway.....). Will this solve the problem? I think its an unlikely.

Generally speaking installing an ATF as an extra add on to the existing cooling provided by the manufacturer is a good idea. In your case, I suspect you will end up with substituting original oil-water cooler to a air-cooled system. If this is what you are going to end up with, it will still work (about 80% of the driving conditions) and with a fan added to the ATF cooler.

The 20% of the time is during high load driving conditions (engine rpm high, and vehicle speed is very low, eg, Genting). This ATF cooler air-cooled system, is insufficient. I have installed ATF temp gauge, I know. Although mine is an MPV, I would think that yours could that much difference.

Changing ATF every 15k or every oil change is just a temporary solution to this problem.

The other thing that can contribute significantly to heat generation in your AL4 GB is the lock-up clutch. I would guestimate that the diff is about as much as 30% more heat. Have heard that some GBs after overhaul/rebuilt this is not working properly or not working for some.... they say is like that wan lor.... u know...

Anyway, hope this helps. Good luck with the ATF cooler.
