hi guys, i will be sending in my car for the 10,000 km service. from day 1 until now i have been using Petronas Mach 5 mineral oil 10w30.

given the options (not many, though. Authorized proton service centers make u use either Petronas or Shell to cover warranty), which type of oil should i go for? continue with Mineral or use the Semi-synthetic?

currently with my conservative driving culture, 60% highway 40% city, i am getting about 10km / liter. (which translates to RM 0.18/km).

Howdie..cps amigos....my cps is abt 17k KM been using Castrol Magnatec 10-40W since the first scheduled service till now..everything still quite smooth besides the oil gettin darker after 13k when i pull out the dip stick for a look....

Dear sifus, abt the oil gettin darker...is it that the effect of engine oil cleaning the engine? as i notice that when around 5k - 10k the engine oil is still quite yellow golden...

anyway...is there any significant improvement to use a better brand engine oil? such as Shell or Mobil...

btwn Castrol, Mobil & Shell [Semi-S]...which is the more preferred popular choice?

Most people keep semi syn. oil up to 8k km interval only. The oil getting dark is due to dirt in the oil from the cleaning of the engine. Doing an oil change will remove them. Keeping them on a longer basis will tent to dirty the internal of the engine.

How will you grade a better brand engine oil? Stick to popular brand and use the correct viscosity for your ride..... smile_thumbup.gif

If engine is new, stick to recommended viscosity. Why did you change to 10w-40 in the first place?
How do you find it? If okay, then continue using.
5w-40 will be lighter than 10w-40..... smile_tongue.gif

bro. chy,
Very easy. The end number denotes it's thickness, therefore the 30 is lighter than 40.
There is actually no harm in using a 10w-40 in replace to a 10w-30. The effects are a heavy feel in engine performance especially if your engine is small like the kancil etc. For a larger engine like Waja, you may not feel the difference.
Having said that maybe you will get higher FC also, because of the heavier oil.
If an engine is old and worn, then using a thicker oil would be better....... smile_tongue.gif
