Does anybody knows when the Kia Sorento with VGTurbocharger will be
brought into Malaysia? At the moment, the lefthand drive is available in
Korea. The power is increased to 170ps with 2.5L CDRi. Diesels engine are
getting better by the day and now Alfa has a 2.4L diesel engine with
200ps. If this engine is fitted into a SUV it would be wonderful. Anyway,
does anybody has any news about the Kia Sorento, so far there are still
no facelift?

Wow, variable geometry turbine? That's great! Slurp slurp! Big Smile

Instead of simply waiting for them to bring in the car, you can try being
proactive and go ask about it from the Naza Kia ppl and express yr interest
in getting one... if enough ppl show interest in it, the sales ppl will
reflect this to the management.

So far I've only read about facelift (or is that a model change?) for the
Ssangyong Rexton, but not the Sorento.

Erm, what does the VGT do, specifically?

Try searching for this term, and also Variable Nozzle Turbine/Turbo (VNT).
Basically it's got a device in the exhaust turbine to vary the flow. The
area through which the exhaust flows through is reduced to produce higher
flow during low exhaust flow (low rpm), and increased during higher exhaust
volume.

It's something like VVT-i for the exhaust that reduces turbo lag during low
RPMs while still minimising exhaust restriction/backpressure during high RPMs.

very impressive indeed!
here is one of my google result.

BorgWarner Turbo Systems starts series production for Hyundai Motor Company

BorgWarner Turbo Systems is continuing its expansion in Asia. In March
2005, the turbocharger specialist started series production for Hyundai
Motor Company, Korea. The first products are BV43 turbocharger systems,
which are being manufactured at the joint venture company SeohanWarner
Turbo Systems. The turbocharger with variable turbine geometry (VTG) is
installed in the new Kia Sorento 2.5 CRDI VGT diesel engine, which
initially will be available only on the Korean market.
.
.
This advanced technology is also setting new standards in larger engines
with up to 3.0 litres of displacement, for example in the Audi 3.0-litre V6
diesel and the Ford/Land Rover 2.7-litre V6 diesel power units. Following
its successful launch in European models, BV technology is now also being
used in the Kia Sorento, the first Asian vehicle to benefit from the new
technology.

More power, better fuel economy and lower emissions
.
.
The BV43 turbocharger for the 2.5-litre VGT direct-injection diesel engine
in the Kia Sorento offers the driver a generous 128 kW (174 bhp) of power
at 3800 rpm. This means that the engine develops an impressive 34 bhp more
than its international predecessor with a wastegate. The development of the
engine was also focused on obtaining higher torque and smoother running
while still achieving better fuel economy and lower pollutant emissions.
The engineers were successful in both respects.
.
.

My question is wether Kia is using the same engine as current Sorento or
different engine? (eventhough it is the same cc as I understand it). If
same engine, it'll be interesting question wether the VGT turbo unit can be
fitted to the current Sorento? I believe this may lead to ECU
change/reprogram also. Also gearbox change (ratio reprogramming)? I'm
driving 2003 model so this could be my wildest dream project yet! Anybody
can shed some light ah?

there is a new Sorento already being sold in China and US, called Sorento R, it's complete new model more like Harrier crossover, and comes with VGT. Naza could have brought in the old Sorento (facelifted) more than year ago with VGT but didn't. When this new one comes here is anybody's guess.

We can bump up standard Sorento performance from 140hp up to 170hp via remapping/chiptuning your car. In that sense, you get to enjoy the better performance of the VG version for so much less investment.
