My 10 year old ulysse has gearbox problem. It crunch/grind especially in 3rd gear. I've got few options:
1) Repair the synchromesh gear (BUT this is very expensive and not many mechanic is willing to do it)
2) Buy 2ndhand gearbox (BUT its not easy to get a 2ndhand one!)
3) Swap the gearbox with xantia gearbox (this maybe possible BUT the gear ratio may not suit)
4) Swap in a xantia auto gearbox ( good idea/no more hard clutch BUT may loss some power especially with the small existing 1900 cc engine)
5) Swap in a petrol engine ( ulysse/Evasion/807)
6) Sell the whole car BUT the selling price is damn low!

Can anybody give me a better suggestion. TQ

Hi Mao,

Its been a long long time since I was here. Sold my TD for 36K then and have a wonderful 5 yrs of trouble free driving the Toyota Wish. Now itchy again looking at continentals. Heard the price is obscenely low. Skoda 06 (new) going for 98K only. What's the new price of the Ulysse now?

Anyway, to share my gearbox problem which might help. The 3rd Synchro is gone as you say but its the same as the 5th synchro. The last time, they swapped the synchro cos 5th gear uses less stress so the 3rd which went to 5th and vice versa worked absolutely fine. Had to do it cos' no spares anywhere then. Anyway, labour to do that cost $1500 and two days cos the whole gearbox is removed. If you can get the spares, then it should work better but they normally ask you to change all so that you need not open the box again in case the others are on the way too but not sure what the cost of parts will be now.

Another thing you can do is to double de-clutch
http://www.torquecar...e-clutching.php

I was doing that most of the time until I got the vehicle sorted out. You'll get the hang of it after a while.

If you plan to sell take the bite and get rid of it before, you need to pay to get rid of it yourself smile.gif When I started, I was hoping for 53K, then 48K and slowly slowly in the end took the bite at 36K. I could have sold it at a higher price if I were not stubborn. Anyway, good lesson learned. If I'm selling mine, even if the difference is 2-5 K, I'll let it go smile.gif

John

Hi John,

Its nice to hear from you again. Thanks a lot for the helpful advice. By the time I wrote this article my gearbox problem was almost solved. A week ago I changed the gearbox oil and added gear oil treatment. Yesterday I managed to slide in 3rd without any crunch. Its miracle.
I did not want to sell this ulysse cos' its a comfortable car and secondly I do not want to take anymore loan. I found the engine is really tough except the belting can be very messy. I modified some of the parts.
1. 2nd hand BMW alternator (Cheap).
2. Nippondenso AC compressor.
3. By pass the starting code system ( no more to key-in the code)
The others parts are sill the original parts.
2nd value now is around RM15,000 or maybe less. might as well keep it since it does not give much problem. The only problem is its hard clutch.
BTW I heard that Toyota Wish price is going down, I saw one '04 recond unit selling just below 90k. Maybe I'm thinking of getting one during the bad recession. I guess you bought your Wish for 170k.

Regards

Hi Mao,

Wah. you have yourself a "fiakenstien" :-) I had endless problems with the engine damper spring that makes horrible gorr gorr noise n it cost almost 1k to replace the damper n belt tensioner at leat 3 times in every 2 yrs.

Anyway, I paid 150K for a new Wish 04 then, excluding insurance n road tax, no alarm, no stereo. So add all these incl Captor, about 160K. Thus far done almost 150K km, only change aborbers once, brakepads twice, fan belt once and whole set of engine mounts, two batteries. Just only added gas and some oil to the a/c. Yes, no need to service a/c. My theory... If its not broken. don't touch it. Both my cars are now about 5- 6 yrs and have not done anything to the a/c except cleaning the blower filter behind the glove compartment until the Wish was not cold recently in a jam. Checked n topped up gas. Still cold after 4 days :-)

Was thinking too about changing cars cos price have come down a bit including my Wish but what the heck, I'm getting cheaper cars too so balance out lah! Was very very interested in a 2004 Volvo S80 2.9 T6 selling dirt cheap (practically one to one exchange for my Wish) new volvo then was RM 340K wor... but alas, no balls to buy for fear of magnimous maintenance. sad.gif 9 out of 10 discouraged me from buying the T6.

I chanced on Fiat Ulysse 05 model but new selling quite cheap. Torino must have either brought in a heck of a lot or they have lousy sales persons. 05 stock still got ah! That's why I came back to this forum trying to fish some info from users. But wifey is not happy. "You still want Fiat, ah? Have not gone enough trouble last time meh?, heh heh

Who knows if they are desperate enough , they may want to sell the new 05 Ulysse for 90K? At that price, can buy or not?

Anyway, my heart still goes to S80, so still looking for a good 05 or 06 normal 2.0T instead of the 2.9 T6. Been looking at BMW E39 too (5 series previous models) - but still expensive.

But by the looks of the Fiat models available now, wonder if there will be a new importer soon. I liked the Citroen C4 Picasso Grand. Too pricey for today's environment. VW n BMW cars are also tumbling their prices.. with pre registration vehicles. Just a bit out of my reach now sad.gif

Well, I still like the comfort of the Fiat but just cannot cope with the nonsence... But who knows, I might just hop into the frying pan again by buying the Ulysse.

Regards

Hi again John,

To be frank I don't like this ulysse either except for its comfortable ride. I forgot to mention to you that I have to change the belting and bearing twice. Its my fault cos' I tighten the belt unnecessarily(which I should have not). Big mistake. I do a lot of diy on this ulysse. So this machine is like my pet. I can sense if she gets sick. .
Frankly I don't like the engine because its not very easy to service compared to other Japanese engine.
The evasion (petrol, manual speed with hydraulic clutch) was a success. A few of my friends bought 2nd hand model and they were very happy and satisfied. It is easier maintenance compared to the diesel and those with cable clutch model.
IMHO I think we should stick to Japanese car for easir maintenance, especially during this bad time. I fear you will be very tempted to continental cars especially when the cost are very cheap. So think twice before you decide to get another european car.
