Reason why Volvo is dying is because of being too overpriced and placed itself on par with BMW, Mercedes and Audi. By right it should be on par with little more expensive than the Japanese makes.

For example, in 2002, Toyota Camry 2.0 RM160k, Volvo S70 RM169k. S40 at that time, sorry I forgot the price, have to refer to old catalogue. Volvo is supposed to be merely affordable executive cars, not luxury cars. This is the biggest mistake ever.

To be exact,

If Civic 2.0 is priced at RM128k, S40 should be RM135-138k and powered by 1.8L or 2.0L and not 2.4L. Even the bigger bro S60 is just 2.0T. Mistake done by Federal Auto to bring in the bigger than 2.4L in which I would call it 2.5L.

Camry & Accord 2.0 around RM141k, Volvo S60 2.0T should be RM160-170k.

Camry & Accord 2.4 around RM170k, Volvo S80 2.5L RM190-200k more appropriate.

Too bad but there's still time to recorrect the matter as there are those who love Volvo because of its durability and reliability despite being conti.

actually just curious to know how did u catergorize the car? by size? by engine cc? by specification? or by price?

if u said S40 should compare with Civic bcos of its size then how about BMW 3 series? they all are almost same size, then from your point of view, BMW must be "highly" over priced then.

if u want to compare the engine displacement (cc) , u said S40 should use 2.0litre engine instead, then 320i and C class C200k or even E class E200k (in fact the engine is only 1.8litre), should also bring down their price bcos of the engine size??

how did u differentiate merely executive and luxury car? by its price? brand name? specifications? or performance?

no offend, just my point of view.

From your statement above doubt you are a Volvo lover....as you not even know S70 had been totally replaced by S60 on 2002....and further more S70 2.0T was selling at rm188,705.82 and V70 2.0t was selling at rm188,950.61 on 2001( end of that year was launched of S60 and S/V70 are totally replaced by then )

unless you can converse me with more fact's...

and FYI, during 2001- 2002, S40 are selling at rm 173,338.61 and V40 are price at 1 cent less....

Hi Mr Andrew & Mr V,

BMW, Merc are on upper class though comparable to Civic. Volvo should be priced slightly little more than executive class Jap cars, not way above em. Big mistake. Not to forget this is Malaysia and engine size must not be too big. Even back then, they r priced just 10-20k above their respective categories.

It's overprice is definitely an eyesore even to Volvo lovers. If Volvo continue to act like they r selling luxury cars, they won't be able to hold for long and end up like other conti. The only make/model that managed to breach into luxury segment is Volkswagen/Audi upgraded from common conti carmaker. Before this back in the b4 late 90's it was struggling to survive in car market and wary behind Volvo. Today, they beat Volvo.

Hello Mr J

Strongly suggest you should go visit most car's (regardless any manufacturer ) showrooms in town and ask for the catalog of each car's specifcation and pricing and go home do you own home works and after a month time then come back here post your finding and comparison on each car's spec & price and concluded your category with those are in similar and tell us where will Bimmer/Merch to be position, same to Volvo & Honda as well...

and if your finding are with well support by most forummers here then suggest you send your personnel resume to ministery of trade and ask for a job as a official who reposible for approve the cars selling price submission , then you can benefit all our us in this country with approved the volvo selling price similar to honda.....HAHAHAHAHAHA smile_clown.gif

Thank you

Actually I have to agree with Mr V and Mr Andrew on this. As much as I wish that the price of the Volvo will be at par with Honda and Toyota, I do not think that its possible considering the quality of the car. And I disagree with Mr Jay that VW and Audi has actually bring itself into the elite category. Maybe Audi, but definitely not VW. If you are driving VW you definitely know that it is just a very continental Toyata - reliable and dependable but not luxurious as what you can get in a Merc or Beemer or even a Volvo. I drove VW Passat for about a month back during my time in the UK, the result - just like another good car, but nothing to shout about. In fact, a Rover I think is better than VW in many ways.

I think what makes the price difference between the Honda Civic and Volvo S40 (we should not be comparing it in the 1st place since they both are totally different animal and class) is the tax element. S40 have more taxes paid to Govt for more imported parts than a Civic which has more local parts than Volvo - though both are CKDs. But you can actually see the difference in quality made for both cars.

My personal experience was not with Honda but with Toyota. Last year I went to Volvo showroom and test drove S40. 1hour later I went to Toyota showroom next door and tested Camry. Big Mistake...... Suddenly the finishing in Camry felt very kodi..... Driving behaviour is also not as solid. Mind you this is a Camry 2.4 I am talking about and don't even start with a Civic, which is one class lower. Frankly, I should have done the reverse - Toyota first then Volvo. Then I would not have so much complain about Camry. Camry is an excellent car, but Volvo is better.

Anyhow, Mr J, I think you should try to rent those cars for a few days or test drive them all at least. Maybe you can experience the difference much better that way.

Greetings Mr Andrew, Mr V n Encik Fadli,

Opps I missed that 1, yes true Honda Civic is the same C segment as BMW 3series, Citroen C4, Volvo S40.

Car price back in 1990,
Honda Accord 2.0EXi RM76k
Ford Telstar 2.0Ghia RM66k
Ford Laser 1.5 RM40k+
Volvo 240SE forgot but within RM60k-70k
Volvo 740GLE around RM90k
Pug 405 (flat dashboard) RM80k+
Honda Civic 1.5 around RM40k near RM50k
Proton Saga 1.5I RM30k+

At that time, Volvo, Citroen n Pug priced similarly as non-luxury conti from Europe whereas
Audi 100 2.0E RM110k
BMW 520i e34 12valve RM160k-170k (can't remember, but 520i '91 24valve priced at RM185k)
BMW 730i RM350k
BMW 318i RM85k

Volkswagen never heard at that time. Mostly can't survive due to ugly design. Even Audi under AutoDunia almost went bankrupt.

So u could see, Volvo is on par with Pug, priced not far away. So by today standard Volvo S60 should be around RM170k+ same category as Pug 407 & Citroen C5 with lil more expensive. Pug price only lowered after NAZA took over. S40 should be RM140k+, at RM20k more than Civic 2.0 at RM126k

Now that Volvo management set their settings closer to BMW, Volvo S60 at RM230k, that's more than half of Citroen C5. Volvo S40 2.5L when launched at RM190k but now lowered to RM169k, small car with big engine? At RM230k, I could go for BMW 3series or Merc C-Class. Ever since after Volvo S80 brought in at over RM200k in 1999, that's the last time I went to Volvo showroom. How Federal Auto survive these days?
