Let's give AEIOU a BIG round of applause for his brilliant idea.
I have gotten myself an old Nokia fitted with new ori/hi-capacity batt that can last easily 10-12 days. Disabled all functions that may consume more power like BT, IR etc. It would be even better if you can block incoming sms.

Thank you ! Thank you ! Just my humble little idea for sharing and benefit to all Malaysia motorists.

Just wanna ask something, what if you track the car and found it chopped up? We know how fast these guys work. How does insurance deal with chopped up recovered cars? If they don't give compensation or partial compensation wouldn't it be better if the vehicle is not found at all?

LOL...!!! ...LOL !!! The cheap home made GSM tracking device is for you to track your car. I repeat, just to track your car based on the nearest BTS your car is linking to. How you want to utilise this "added function" is entirely up to you.
In this case, you can use your "wisdom" or common sense to decide whether your chopped car is to be found or not to be found. You make that decision.....not that dumb home made GSM tracking device.

Telco service helps man find stolen ‘friend’
Other News & Views

FRIEND Finder, a service provided by telecommunications companies to locate their users’ friends, helped a man find his stolen car in Johor Baru.

Sin Chew Daily reported that the man, identified only as Mr Ye, had used the service as an anti-theft device for over a year.

He kept a phone activated with the service in his Toyota Camry car.

On Sunday, Ye found that his car parked in Permas Jaya was missing at about 9.30pm.

He traced his “friend†in the car and the response showed that the vehicle was in Taman Nusa Bistari 2. “After a three and a half hour search in the housing estate, I recovered my car by the roadside,†he said.

Ye encouraged the public to use this cheap and useful service, saying that his anti-car theft device was only a cellphone that cost less than RM100 and a pre-paid service card.

Well, once the thief discovered your hidden phone....your are defeated. You lose, thief win that's it.
Only maxis and digi offer friend finder service. Activate Holink 365 or Digi Super Long Life in order to get 1 year validity period without reload.

Stolen car recovered -- thanks to good old handphone

Stolen car recovered -- thanks to good old handphone
by Kong See Hoh

PETALING JAYA (March 5, 2009): A car owner recovered his stolen vehicle with the help of a handphone he hid in the car and a telco company's Friend Finder service, Sin Chew Daily reported today.

Relating his story, the owner described how car thieves are able to disable the car alarm system by drilling a small hole near the taillight where the "control panel" of the security system is located.

The owner, identified in the report only by his surname Yap, found his Toyota Camry missing from the car park of a hypermarket in Johor Baru at 9pm on Sunday.

He lodged a report at the police headquarters and told police he had a handphone hidden in the car which can help them locate the missing car with the assistance of the Friend Finder (FF) service provided by a telco.

He also showed the investigation officer the search result of the FF service but the latter appeared not very convinced.

Yap said the search result showed that his car was in Taman Nusa Bestari 2.

He said although the officer was still doubtful of his self-made tracking system, the latter promised to follow up on it and contacted the Skudai police for assistance.

In the meantime, Yap and his friends wasted no time and launched their own search at 10.30pm after lodging the police report.

Three-and-a-half hours later, they spotted the car parked in an alley about 1km from the Nusajaya police station.

Yap said he subscribed to the FF service about a year ago and turned it into a tracking system.

He said all he has to pay is for a handphone costing not more than RM100, a RM50 prepaid card and a monthly service charge of not more than a month.

It is much cheaper than subscribing to an anti-theft satellite tracking system which costs several thousand ringgit to install on top of the monthly service charge, he said, and all he needs to do is ensure the phone does not run out of battery.

He said when he first recommended it to friends, they poked fun at him.

A car accessories car owner once told me once he met an ex car thief who told him usually they would try to avoid peddle lock as most troublesome to break. Stearing lock easiest to break. Cheap one just few knocks already kaput.

Combine immobiliser, peddle lock cum friend finder etc ... make life difficult for thiefs and robbers. Hey, what happen to this country nowadays?!

I am currently trying the friend finder service on my Digi phone.... I am using the digi to track
on a Maxis phone.... and I find that the location is not so accurate.... I read somewhere in the
forum that the location is dependent on the telco's nearest base station....

does that mean if I use Maxis it will be better since it has more coverage and base station ?
If I use digi to track Maxis line...(whose base station they will use to track; digi or maxis ?)
