Hi all,

I'm currently contemplating to purchase a second hand Volvo S80 (year 02-03). A number of my friends suggest that it is a bad idea. However I really like its sleek appearance, technology and the most important thing safety and value for money.

I hope to get recommendations from current and previous owners regarding a few potential issues (as advised by a number of my friends) before I continue with this purchase.

1) Will it cost very expensive to service and maintain this car? If it very expensive, can we get reasonably priced parts?

2) What are the likely parts that need to be replaced for a Volvo s80 (year 02-03 around 140 000 to 150 000 km mileage)

3) Can it run with RON95?

4) I'm living in the northern part of Malaysia (Perlis), any authorised workshop in that area that can serve me?

Appreciate advice, recommendation, insight or anecdotes about Volvo s80.

Thank you in advance,
Brugge...

Let me try to answer some of your question...

1) Will it cost very expensive to service and maintain this car? If it very expensive, can we get reasonably priced parts?
Is this your 1st time dealing with contil car ? is "yes" then the my answer is "yes" the spare parts of Volvo will be expensive if compare to those japanese or local car, in fact most contil car parts are expensive and not just Volvo. and if you are looking for cheaper Volvo parts then you can look for OEM volvo parts (Volvo parts that without VOLVO logo)that normally cheaper than original Volvo parts by 30-50%.

2) What are the likely parts that need to be replaced for a Volvo s80 (year 02-03 around 140 000 to 150 000 km mileage)
For this range of mileage or 8-9years old of used car, normaly parts like absorber, lower arm bushse, engine mounting, link rods, antil roll bar, tie rod, ball joints, brake disc & pad, radiator, alternator, air con magnectic clutch, air mass sensor, throttle body, thermostat, PCV system..will need to replace if their are still original parts as the car.

3) Can it run with RON95?
If it is 2.0T model then it can run on RON95 without problem. T6 model need to run on min RON97.

4) I'm living in the northern part of Malaysia (Perlis), any authorised workshop in that area that can serve me?

Good choice Bro... esp with family as safety comes first....smile_thumbup.gif

1. Get the 2006 model lah, ard RM 90K, can go for 9 yrs loan lagi.

2. Ya, conti parts are more expensive, but bear in mind, it's more durable compare to local one.

3. I think any workshop can service/repair it but whether got expertise up north, then sorry lah, cannot help you.

Good luck!!! Check out this link...http://www.mudah.my/Volvo+S80+2+0T-9780538.htm

Perfect choice! I'd say you'll have the best and comfortable car in your garage, indeed it is the safest brand available to date. Volvo have been known for that for many years, and its reputation continues until now. The straight five engine is very unique to today's car come have just four while the five cylinder produces close to 200 BHP

Get the 2002 model. Or later is budget permits

Search the web and the common problems for this years are the electronic throttle unit, electrical glitches and transmission.

Depending on what you want, S80 is bigger especially the rear seat space. And the center console slightly different. More luxury a bit than the S60. But S60 also nice car already.

Most important of all, get an experienced mechanic to have a look at the car first and if can insist to scan for error codes. Have come across at my mechanic place of too many sad stories of owners being burned by buying these new (used) volvo models without doing their homework.

With the current resale value of these cars for MY 2000-2001 the price is tempting.

What about Year 2008 S80? I'm particularly interested with the 2.5T version.

What is the fuel consumption rated in km/L?
