From my frens using the 520d, so far no complains and returns excellent mileage. I am personally driving a 3 series diesel model for close to 3years clocking close to 60000km also without problems. Recently added a tuning box tat uprated the engine from 380NM to 450NM (frens of similar car tested on dyno).

Tuning box ? Hahahah ... pls pls pls tell more ...

Name/Brand?
Cost ?
Torque -> Increase to 450 Nm , at what RPM ? upto 4000 rpm or still at 1750 - 2750 rpm ?
TopSpeed > got increase ? or still stuck at 225kmh ?

QUOTE
If you do migrate to diesel (sorry just assuming you are driving a petrol car), you will first notice the diesel clatter at idle but once the car starts moving, it is as good if not better than petrol of similar capacity. Hope this little info helps.

(Additional info: full tank of 55L from first fuel warning light returns approximately 600-650km of mileage. THats approximately 80% heavy traffic as I work near KLCC area. Outstation drive even at above legal speed limit returns approximately 800-1000km on a full tank. Best record is 1100km @ 110-120kmh)

good info.

I am using DTUK (Diesel Tuning U.Kingdom). Got it at a special price thru a friend. Go to BMWclub Malaysia to read more. Plenty of Dyno Maps there to understand the increase in torque and also at what RPM range. Other tuning box commonly available is Vector or you may try a similar product like Sprint Booster called Pedal Box (this one requires drive by wire technology). It makes the throttle more sensitive and shortens your accelerator pedal journey.

The tuning box either has 2 channel or single channel monitoring the fuel injection and also your turbo boost. Its a simple plug and play system without any need to cut any wires. It won't void your warranty either (provided you remove the tuning box before you send it in for your BSRI svs....lol!!! So you have been warned ya!)

As for DTUK, you have a total of 4 maps to choose from. With each map, you either pick the standard setting or +10 to +30% additional boost. You may also select the other way round - 10 to -30%. CUrrently I am on Map 3 +20%. So far this best suits my driving style/need and reduces turbo lag significantly.

F10 520i Turbo and 528i Turbo are really expected end 2011. Ponder if pricing will be since competitive as the 520d.... Fat hopes?

Hi bro,I'm really keen on turbo diesel. However am concerned about the premature carbon buildup on DGI engines. Yours no problem for last 3 years,is it MPI? If yours is DGI,are you doing any preventive maintenance. Would like to hear about it,before I sink myself into getting the turbo diesel!

Bro,

My apologies for my late reply. Work has not been forgiving since the end of last year.

Currently clocked 77k KM & my next service is due by month end. During BSRI, I usually change engine oil around 8k km. After BSRI, I keep to 6k km interval between oil change. Been using Ravenol, Syntium, Rowe & Castrol Edge. Ravenol works best for me and Castrol Edge the worst. Only Syntium and Castrol, I experience oil lost around 1/4 (frm my OBC's reading) upon reaching 6k km. Ravenol & Rowe has been consistent without oil lost until next oil change. Ravenol is best because engine feels more free-revving & diesel clatter is subdued.

Apart from the 6k km oil change, d oni other preventive maintenance i do is to add a bottle of diesel fuel cleaner once a month into my fuel tank. You can get it from Tesco or Ace Hardware from around RM12-20 depending on brand.

Besides the above and the need to monitor your rear tire threads (wear and tear faster due to the torque), I do not do any additional preventive maintenance on my ride.

Friends using E90 and F10 diesel clocking up to 160k km do the same & only 1 had a problem with his alternator (premature wear & I believe it was due to factory defect since alternators are usually long lasting) & 3 so far experienced leaky turbo hose (me inclusive). Rectified by replacing the hose at RM1.2K (inclusive of labor). Apart from the above, the remaining issues are all confined to the models typical problems regardless if it’s a diesel or petrol. The above sampling is not from 3 or 4 cars but from a group of approximately 20 diesel owners.

So as a BMW diesel owner for 3 1/2 years soon, I don't feel a diesel car requires significantly more preventive maintenance compared to its petrol sibling. For a similar engine size BMW, d oni thing i suffer & miss is d smooth engine idle. Now u get an engine clatter instead. However, the plus side you gain is the torque that is so intoxicating in city drive.

Had many runs with 325i, 328i & 335i on NKVE before, diesel car no way lacks except for speed in excess of 230kmh (especially true with DTUK on). Then again, how often do you get to drive at such break-neck speed. Even my friend who drives a 335i commented that he has problems shaking all the 320d during our convoy. To a purist, I will probably be labeled a cheapskate because for the price I am paying for a 2.0L car, I do somewhat get between a 2.0i and a 325i/328i/335i performance minus the smooth L6 engine. Honestly I am fine with that because in return i get between 7-14 days between fuel ups & yet able to enjoy performance close to its higher capacity siblings. Honestly if i wanna enjoy a petrol car, i will leave tat to my weekend car. While i do so, i will use my diesel ride as my daily workhorse & d savings plough into my weekend car.

Hope d above is enough to help u cross over to d dark side...lol!!! Do let me know if u need more information. Cheers mate!

Hehehe...........yes the dark side is getting more exciting after reading your input. Tks a mil.Btw any problems with cat converter due to our poor diesel quality.

I hv not experience any error codes from clogged cat converter if tat is what you are asking. However, I stick to Caltex diesel (car spew least black smoke momentarily when u suddenly floor ur accelerator. The black smoke-gray smoke actually, does not happen all the time. If you drive ur ride aggressively, there wont be a chance for carbon built-up so you hardly get gray smoke from ur exhaust. If you drive sedately continuously for some time, when you suddenly floor ur accelerator, you will see a small puff of gray smoke from ur exhaust. After 1-2 seconds, all clean and clear. So i usually take my car for a nice long drive once a month to clear up the carbon built-up). 2nd best choice will be petronas as they tend to have more medium size nozzle (only medium size fuel pump nozzle fits into BMW Diesel cars).

Good to know, cat converters are ok with our diesel. Having had several contis, there is one thing that is common. They are not happy with long term sedate driving. I do a fair bit of outstation drives, give it a good push every run. But with AES now,it is getting rather boring. Anyway try to atleast hit 140/150kmh for 30 minutes.

Tks for the nozzle update. Was planning to switch to Petronas when I get my diesel, cos it is very close to my house.
