hi to all,

i need to find out more about these SUVs????

i've identified these 3 SUV but can't decide... : the Prado 97-99'(A) TZ 3.0(D); LR discovery 03-04'(A) (2.5D) and Toyota Harriers 99-01' (A) (2.2)

they are all within my budget of 60-80K which i can afford. the purpose of this getting one of these is to get a bigger car as my current 156 is not big enough to get around anymore. it will be mainly used for urban driving and occasional dirt.

This is what i've researched:

Prado 97-99'(A) TZ 3.0(D)
i've heard that the prado is a relatively easy to maintain as there are many parts available thru the potong kereta shops and 3rd party parts. however the 3.0cc will be quite high in roadtax and fuel consumption. it looks quite dated as well. but it is my list as it is a full blown 4X4 vehicle and will get past a lot of huddles.
i don't know if i can get a loan for this as well since it is from 97-99 onli. the newer one are above my budget.

LR discovery 03-04'(A) (2.5D)
there are many mixed reviews about maintaining the discovery. some say it is damn expensive, some say it is ok. all u need to do is to fork out about 5k when u get the car and after that the cost to maintain the discovery is quite ok as there are now my shops who know how to fix and maintain the discovery apart from SD who are cheaper.. i can't seem to find a person who can tell me a definate answer. this worries me a bit as i know that European cars maintainience can go very high. the loan should be ok as it only6-7 yrs. it looks quite good as well. it is also a full blown 4X4..

Toyota Harriers 99-01' (A) (2.2)
now this is a a soccer mum SUV. i've heard to maintain the harrier is the least problem of all the 3. plenty of parts and everyone knows how to repair it. however it is the smallest of all the 3 and it is a 2X4. i don't know about the fuel consumption as it is only 2.2cc. it looks quite dated as well...

hope u guys can help me in giving me more information about these 3 SUV. i'm not really experience in the SUV and 4x4 and it is going to be the 1st one i owned.

thanks in advance.

Ed...

For a budget of RM60k, you could get a 2005/2006 Rexton RX270XDI, a 7 seaters that comes with Merc engine and transmission with more than 160+HP. It offer a wide range of luxury features that matched any luxury SUV. It most suitable for inexperience 1st time 4X4 driver as 4WD engagement is by pressing of a button only unlike some older 4X4 that require manual gear engagement. If you are mainly driving urban and occasional off-road, you would prefer one that drive well on city and comfortably on expressway as its top speed reaching 190kmh. To me, I find the maintenance is cheaper, if not about the same with any other SUV. A full sized 4X4 always has more parts and maintenance as compared to MPV or Sedan, but then you get the advantage of off-road capability and all terrain readiness plus Rexton comes with 7 seaters that doubled up as MPV as well.

Example, Korean Car Mate is offering RM149 promotion. Check out http://forum.autowor...showtopic=97060

REXTON 2.3/2.7/2.9-RM149nett
STAVIC-RM149nett
CHAIRMAN-RM149nett
KYRON-RM149nett
ACTYON-RM149nett
MUSSO-RM149nett

Package include Fully imported Korea SK 15W40 Lub oil + oil filter + 19points inspection + labor charge +
Free engine diagnostic (worth RM68). 100% Satisfaction Guaranteed!

Logically, don't you think maintenance and repair cost would be much higher if you get a 10~12 years Prado with outdated technology and aging parts as compared to a Rexton half the age? Rexton is using Merc diesel commonrail turbo engine and 5 speed transmission with EGR and DPF which qualify it as green engine for lower road tax (RM1,100+ a year).

My Bro-In-Law who has driven several 4X4 including Prado TZ, Pajero Intercooler & Pajero is amazed with the performance power, quietness, luxury and comfort of Rexton when he driven mine. Not to mention its fuel consumption of RM100 for about 500km city drive or 600km~650km on highway which is among the best FC compared to others in size.

Join our TT and you will get to meet the rest of the Rextonians and hear their experience with their Rexton from them directly. With Rexton Hub, all the Rextonians can interact and share experience and technical knowledge on Rexton. I doubt you can find other 4X4 has as active and sharing environment.

I left my rexton for 3 days to repair the sunroof. the first question that the mechanic ask when I go to pick-up:

"bang, 2 kali saya keluar simpang tayar bunyi, saya ingat macam storm atau pajero........etc"
