hi...

i'm driving a 1.3 fiat punto nuovo... last weekend, the warning signal for
the steering turned red, so my husband took it to a workshop in sunway.
according to the mechanic, there's a problem with the steering motor and
need to be replaced. it costs about rm1k++ for the motor itself.. Dead
any of you can help us on this..? i mean, is it true that the pricing is
like that, or the mechanic has marked up the price..? Blackeye or is there
anyone who can get us the 2nd hand steering motor with of course a more
reasonable price..? heheheheheh

thannx a lot..Blackeye

Do you only have the light coming on or does the steering become hard (no
power assistance)?

There are times when the light would just come on and go off after a while
that might suggest insufficient power going to the motor or motor
overheating. Are you using the correct battery (DIN55)?

If it's just the light, better to wait till it's constantly on & there's
something malfunctioning before taking it to the workshop as you might
have some workshops simply replacing the whole steering column for no
apparent reason.

As far as I know, the motor is darn expensive but shouldn't conk so easily
and last at least 10years.

I've had no real problems with mine till the time I used a temporary
battery & I had that symptom with the light coming on.

BTW, if your steering wheel seems to be making a slight jingling noise
that seems to come out from the steering column or dashboard when you go
over a patchy road or are turning, it could be the bush connecting the
motor to the gear in the steering column is loose. You may try using duct
tape to secure it. I noticed this problem with my Punto and a few others I
test drove.
