Consumers are happy to pay premium price for the "artificial confidence" because there are too many after market brands around and there are just too much of confusion, hence it is natural that they think it is "smart move" to go for original manufacturer brand, such as this Proton SPIII.... and unfortunately there is no significant way of telling whether it is real or not.

I would say, the only way out of this is never about " I heard people say..." or " So and so brands", it is all about education and studies.
