hi to all,

i am considering a conti MPV and what comes to my mind is the following...

1. Fiat Ulysse 2.0 16V
2. Peugout 807
3. Citroen C8

i know all of them are similar but up to what extend they share parts
beside the lights. my questions are.

1. R there using the same engine? Who make the engine?
2. Which one has more electrical problem?
3. It is realible or having repeating problem?

hi,

all are identical as they are manufactured in the same factory in france.
the sevel nord plant are actually a joint venture project between PSA and
fiat Spa. except lancia, all three are sold in malaysia. the spec may
differ. only fiat brought in the 1.9TDi models. HDi engines are not offered
in malaysia, except for 2001 806 that was imported in limited numbers.

"Eurovans" is a common name applied[1] to nearly identical large MPVs
resulting from Sevel, a joint-venture of PSA and Fiat, and manufactured at
Sevel Nord factory in France, near Valenciennes. The first eurovans were
sold as Citroën Evasion (Synergie), Fiat Ulysse, Lancia Zeta and Peugeot
806. The present, second generation, saw the renaming of all but the Ulysse
to Citroën C8, Lancia Phedra and Peugeot 807 respectively.

The eurovans differ little technically and visually, being a prime example
of badge engineering. The eurovans share mechanicals and body structure
with Sevel light commercial vans, Citroën Jumpy (Dispatch), Fiat Scudo and
Peugeot Expert. They are more technically related to PSA than Fiat
vehicles, as PSA governs the Sevel Nord part of the joint-venture.

After 4 mths of ownership, I believe its OK. Its not as bad as other
people say. But its definite more expensive, generally, compare to local
and Japs. Since this car is shared between the 3 makes, u dun have to be
locked in to just Fiat. Secondly, like in any used car buying, you should
be prepare to set a side some money for repairs. For one, the engine
mountings is about whole set should cost around Rm 700 if you know where
to find. If follow RRP then its x2 easily.

Electrical wise, I have the alternator replaced in the 2nd week. That was
the only major breakdown repair I had to do. Even then, I was lucky, I can
still drive home. Original Valeo costs RM2,100. Can find used or modify
lah. Similar to Peugeots 206, 406. Anyway good luck.

hi,
for the current mpv, the price is still at premium. pls compare it to
estima, alphard or other premium japanese mpv, not those serena,unser and
innova.my brother just taken delivery of the late 2003 ulysse II and he got
it at rm88k. very cheap for a premium full size 7 seater mpv. you wont get
any other mpv for that price.pls refer to zulfaag.fotopages.com for ulysse ii.

maintenance wise, if u are rich enough, you can go to the official
dealer/importer workshop. but if u are a prudent owner who are willing to
do some DIy or going to alternative workshops, there are plenty out there,
more so if you are living on klang valley.it wont break your bank as what
people said, they never own a conti car anyway.

so far, i have owned 2 continental car side by side and it does not kill
me. i am still alive and kicking. i am just a normal salaryman, middle
class income group who doesn't want to sacrifice safety and comfort.
styling wise, i think continental cars are designed in such a way that they
appeal to some people only. plus the heritage of the carmaker itself. but
safety is the foremost importance,even japanese cars wont provide that
much.plus the peace if mind that my car wont get stolen (non-desirablility
factor).

hi zulfa,

thanks for sharing. i know it is a premium mpv with good price.
however, there is a know defect of the ulysse II which is the gearbox. i
checked out with few owners and even fiat salesman. somehow, sometime it
got shifting problem.

i am driving a fiat marea weekend too and i agree with u that DIY will be
best for owning such conti car.

hi,
just get the manual ones la, no problem at all. my 1997 806 only available
in manual and they doesn't cost a bomb to maintain. the current market
price for 1997 ulysse or evasion is only rm35k or below. so cheap, and also
there are solutions for the hard clutch pedals. what a revelation, the
pedal feels like a kancil pedal, very light. keep in touch.

88k for a 2003 ulysse II is a good buy.

Tazz,
Can you confirm if this is only Fiats (about the GB problems)? I don't a
lot of it in Citroens. I suspect it could be the agent's work shop. Don't
know just guessing here only.

hi again,
about the clutch pedals, there is a device that was available for 16v
manuals only. the clutch pedal spring is to assist when it is being
depressed. how to describe to u, i dont exactly know. tested my friend's
806 and evasion in ipoh, both are very,very light. not like the present
clutch pedal feel. even the evasion's clutch cable was new, the feel is
better. very light. this is the light at the end of the tunnel.finally.
update to u later for the springs availability.
