I have found no surprises (above any other 'nice' car) in the cost of normal maintenance. (oil, filters, brakes, rotors, etc) It is also quite easy for the average DIY.

brake discs almost 100k km, original pads 55k km, air-con mine untouched for 142k km, engine mountings about 100k km, shocks about 80k km

Yup, I concur, plus tyres lasted around 55k km, air-con untouched at 155k km but making some noises. I did my shocks at 100k km but 80k should be better. Only main problems were minor engine leaks and control arm and bushes.
Actually, I would go for a 325 as the 318 was just a tad slow. However, the running parts would not last as long and perhaps cost more. I may still have the car if it had been a 325.
