I've been using 5w-40 fully synthetic for over 50k km with no problems. OCI is 10k km.
xW-30 is too thin for normal campro but recommended for cps.

i'm no expert in engine oil.. if you need more help on this topic, please go to the Petrol and Oil section in this forum
personally i have been using Q8 Excel Fully Synthetic 5w-40 for the persona since the mileage is 10k km.. now engine is 90k km and i change the oil every 10k intervals. no probs yet in fact the engine still feels like new i will keep continue using this oil for the next few years.
You can use either for mineral, semi-syn or fully-syn as long as the grade is xw-40 (x could be any number, eg. 5w or 10w).

A 5W-40 Fully Synthetic from a reliable source, changed no later than every 15,000 Km is good.

I would ask them where the extra 'engine noise' would come from exactly? Valve train
or piston-ring slap, crank bearings or some other component?
I can see the logic in using slightly thicker oil when the engine is older/has done much
higher mileage, but using good quality synthetic oil from the start will postpone the day
that's required anyway.

i've been using fully synthetic on my 4 year old car, mileage is 100k now, still ok, no noise whatsoever. my oil change interval is between 8-10k. But recently i have upgraded to slightly thicker grade 40.

btw not to forget the following:
- radiator coolant "use toyota coolant": every service interval flush/replace
- ATF replace every 20k km. flush every 40k km
