Battle for Championship Lead at the Asian Festival Of Speed in Indonesia

The Asian Festival Of Speed is back at the Sentul International Circuit, where drivers took to the circuit for the first practice session in preparation for the weekend.

After a long two months break, spectators in Indonesia will get a chance to witness first hand five powerful FIA-Sanctioned race series; Porsche Carrera Cup Asia, Formula BMW Pacific, GT3 Asia, Asian Touring Car Series and the Asian Touring Car-Max.

The Porsche Carrera Cup Asia blasted off the starting grid in 2003 and has never looked back. The premier sportscar series in the region has garnered a massive fan and media following, proving itself to be a highly-competitive and professional racing series.

Using the 911 GT3 Cup (Type 997) tailor-made for customer motorsport with near-standard vehicles, the model marks a clear step towards a thoroughbred racing car. Each car is equipped with a six gear sequential gearbox and an engine output increased to 420 bhp.

As the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia revs up for the second half of its 2009 season, one man is keenly aware of the intense fight for the coveted championship title. Tim Sugden currently leads the championship with a total of 106 points, a 13 point lead from German driver, Christian Menzel of Team StarChase.

Lying third in the championship is reigning Porsche Carrera Cup Asia champion Darryl O’Young, who clinched the title by two points from Menzel last year.

The field is further strengthened by the participation of the leading driver in Indonesia, the highly experienced and popular, Ananda Mikola. Mikola has a long and successful racing career starting out in Formula Asia in 1994 and progressing all the way up to Formula 3000, A1GP and more recently the Speedcar Series. With a home track advantage great things will be expected from the local ace, although he has to learn the unique driving style of the Porsche. Spectators at the Sentul Circuit will also be able to catch up-and-coming racing talents in the Formula BMW Pacific. Launched in 2003, the series has rapidly established itself as the Number One choice for young talent.

Through the Formula BMW Pacific Series drivers are able to showcase their abilities to a wide group of motorsport enthusiasts.

After a two month hiatus, the region’s premier junior single seater racing series resumes here in Sentul. With the first six races of the season having taken place at Malaysia’s Sepang International Circuit, the four rounds held this weekend will be the first time that many of the drivers have competed on the 3.9km track.

Ireland’s Gary Thompson of E-Rain Racing currently leads the charge in both the Drivers Classification and the Rookie Cup, having made the podium in five of six races. His consistent results, have given him an 11-point lead over Formula BMW Pacific Junior Axcil Jefferies of Eurasia Motorsport.

Lying in third is local racing talent, Rio Haryanto of Questnet Team Qi-Meritus, who will be looking to impress the home crowd with some great performance whilst hoping to claim the overall lead this weekend.

Those expecting to see some of the fastest road cars in the world at the Sentul Circuit will not be disappointed when the GT3 Asia drivers line up in one of the most expensive grids of Supercars ever seen in Asia. The Series, which was established by the Supercar Club Hong Kong as the Asia Supercar Challenge in 2003, signed a partnership with Motorsport Asia last year to bring professional organisation an gain a wider audience around Asia and the world.

Spectators will get a chance to see Porsche 997 GT3 Cup cars, including the limited edition Cup S, Ferrari F430 GT3’s, Porsche 996 GT3 Cup, the Aston Martin N24 as well as the Corvette Chevette Z06 GT3. (TheGunner: I think they meant Chevrolet Corvette ZO6??)

The Tjia brothers were seen at the circuit, joking with one another and the rest of the series drivers during the practice session but were fine tuning their settings to the cars. A number of the regular drivers were not able to participate in the races this weekend, allowing for Francis Tjia to quite possibly claim the Championship lead from Sam Yau.

Malaysian driver, Tunku Hammam Sulong is currently in third overall, just eight points behind F.Tjia with Wayne Shen a close fourth just two points behind him. The competition will be close with Hammam the only driver of the three who has in recent years competed at the Indonesian track having a slight advantage over the rest of the participating field in GT3 Asia.

Also participating alongside the supercars this weekend is the Asian Touring Car Series. The series has captured the interest of racing fans through the visual similarities between the race cars and their road going counterparts. This association allows the spectators to relate to the cars that they see on the track to the cars that they own.

This year, the regulations for the Asian Touring Car Series have been altered to create even closer battles among competitors where the Divisions within the series have been removed. All cars now follow the FIA Super Production regulations, which means eligible cars are two-wheel drive with normally-aspirated engines with a maximum capacity of 2000cc. Limited bodywork modifications preserve the familiar original look of the car.

At the circuit this weekend, series regulars will be joined by two local touring car drivers from ASH Motorsport, namely Hari Dharma and Renaldo Koesoemo, both strong competitors in the touring car scene. The duo will be competing in their Honda Integra DC5’s and will have to battle against some of the best touring car drivers from around Asia.

Currently leading the Championship are the trio from Team IMSP-S&D comprising of Hong Kong race legends, Cheung Chi Sing with 39 points, Man Ting Yu three points adrift and Danny Stacy Chau, a further five points behind.

The Asian Festival Of Speed in Sentul will also be the season opener for the much awaited Asian Touring Car-Max (formerly known as ATCS 1500Max Challenge). The fast paced, bumper to bumper races feature some of the best up â€n’ coming stars in the touring car scene from around the region.

ATC-MAX is a competition for Normally Aspirated cars below 1599cc, such as the Honda Jazz, Peugeot 207, Toyota Vios, Proton Neo and Saga, Suzuki Swift and many others that are seen on the roads today.

The series has also attracted a new group of young drivers looking for a future in Touring car racing, as it offers the perfect platform for drivers who have been competing in National One make races or local Touring Car Championships and even the drag and drift competitions seen locally to advance in their touring car careers.

Among those that will be participating in the series this weekend is the Axle Motorsport racing team with two outstanding Asian touring car talents, Thai driver Jack Lemvard and Malaysian Syafiq Ali. Both drivers have shown their capabilities, winning races and touring car championships in their careers thus far.

The duo will be joined on the track this weekend by the local touring car drivers, including local race hero, Fitra Eri. The young driver has been competing and winning various local races in Indonesia and hopes that the stint this weekend will extend to a full series participation.

The Sentul Asian Festival Of Speed will continue with the Official Free Practice Sessions on Friday, 14 August 2009 from 9.20am to 5.10pm local time with the Qualifying and first rounds of races being held on Saturday, 15 August 2009 from 8.20am to 5.30pm local time.

The races on Sunday, 16 August 2009 will begin at 10.10am with the 15-lap Round 9 of the Formula BMW Pacific and ending at 5.05pm local time with the Asian Touring Car Series.

The event will be officiated by the former Indonesian Vice President, Mr. Try Sutrisno, Chairman of Sentul International Circuit, Mr. Hutomo Mandala Putra and the Chairman of IMI, Mr. Yuliari Batubara on Sunday, 16 August 2009 at 3.15pm. They will be joined by the President of Sentul International Circuit, Mr. Tinton Soeprapto and Motorsport Asia CEO, Mr. David Sonenscher.

Free Practice Session Underway at the Asian Festival Of Speed Indonesia

It’s the second day of Free Practices at the Sentul International Circuit in preparation for the Asian Festival Of Speed this weekend. Drivers from the five series, GT3 Asia, Asian Touring Car Series, Porsche Carrera Cup Asia, Formula BMW Pacific and the Asian Touring Car-Max all took to the track to familiarize themselves with the circuit.

It will be the first time on the circuit for quite a number of the drivers but the newly resurfaced track will provide a slightly more level playing field as this is the first outing on the new surface. The weather will also play an important role as showers are expected over the weekend as was witnessed at the end of the day today when the sky opened up with a heavy downpour.

Asian Touring Car Series driver, Adrian Henry D’Silva, will be joined this weekend by two new teammates, his Malaysian counterpart Chin Tzer Jinn and Gary Sham of Hong Kong. After the Free Practice sessions, D’Silva was positive despite finding the circuit more slippery from the cooler weather at the end of the day.

“The circuit is more slippery this year and we have to be more cautious especially in turns 1 and 2. You can’t go flat out at the first turn anymore. I would also expect times from the drivers to come down by about one or two seconds compared to last year.

“After 10 minutes of being out on the track, it started to drizzle especially at the back of the track” said D’Silva after the last session.

For GT3 Asia driver, Tunku Hammam, he still enjoys racing especially with the competitors in the series. The circuit has proved to be slightly more slippery but he is confident he will be able to climb on the podium over the weekend.

“I am still re-learning the track I suppose and I hope to be faster later this afternoon and hopefully I will do well during the qualifying. I definitely want to win but we will see how it goes” said a relaxed Hammam. For Asian Touring Car-Max driver, Syafiq Ali, his return to racing started out with a little bit of trouble. “My throttle cable came off on turn seven and I only managed one lap before having to come in. But the mechanics did a great job and managed to solve the problem”.

The young Malaysian driver is taking part this weekend with Axle Motorsport alongside 2008 Asian Touring Car Series Champion, Jack Lemvard.

The Asian Festival Of Speed will also feature the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia and the Formula BMW Pacific during the weekend.

Qualifying and first rounds of races will be held on Saturday, 15 August 2009 from 8.20am to 5.30pm local time.

Hutome Mandala Putra and the Chairman of IMI, Mr. Yuliari Batubara on Sunday, 16 August 2009 at 3.15pm. They will be joined by the President of Sentul International Circuit, Mr. Tinton Soeprapto and Motorsport Asia CEO, Mr. David Sonenscher.

Race Quotes – Asian Touring Car-Max Round 1

Fitra Eri took the win in the season opener of the Asian Touring Car-Max series held during the Asian Festival Of Speed at the Sentul International Circuit today.

The Indonesian touring car driver drove well and stayed ahead throughout the race for the Toyota Top1 Garda Oto Racing Team and beat out reigning ATC-Max champion Syafiq Ali to the finish line.

Ali had a great battle with Roy Haryanto from Division two changing positions several times throughout the race before managing to reclaim second at the last turn of the last lap.

Fitra Eri, Car #18

I was expecting a closer battle as the times are pretty close during the qualifying session but then I saw behind me Syafiq took Roy I was glad to see that. This is our first International race and I am happy with the win.

I would like to thank my team and my sponsors for getting us here and giving us a chance to race this weekend.

Syafiq Ali, Car #1

Basically I did not manage to make a good start and Roy passed me at the first corner and his car is faster than mine on the straight but I did manage to catch up with him at the last corner.

There was a lot of give and take, we passed each other a few times before I managed to take him at the final corner.

Roy Haryanto, Car #4

It was a good race, interesting for the spectators to watch. Both of us are in different divisions and we use different specification cars. I gained on the straight and he gained on the corners.

But in the end, I made a mistake at the final turn and he took me for second.

Subject: Round 9 Results

Haryanto takes over championship lead with third win.

Sentul, Indonesia –Rio Haryanto (16/Questnet Team Qi-Meritus) took his third win of the weekend and now leads the overall Formula BMW Pacific Drivers Classification as the Indonesian delighted home supporters at the Sentul International Circuit. Second on the podium is Rookie Cup leader Gary Thompson (IRL/17/E-Rain Racing), while Formula BMW Pacific Junior Axcil Jefferies (ZIM/15/Eurasia Motorsport) finished third.

Haryanto has now won four races in a row, including three at the 3.960 km circuit located outside of Jakarta. Haryanto now leads previous Drivers Classification leader Thompson by four points, with Jefferies a further 17 points adrift.

From pole position, Haryanto and second-place Fahmi Ilyas (MAS/17/E-Rain Racing) had a slight coming together in Lap 1, allowing Thompson to slip by the two and move into the lead. However, Haryanto re-gained the lead on the first turn of Lap 5 after a slight coming together between him and Thompson. Haryanto then finished the job with a 3.577 second lead over second place.

Jefferies, who has reached his second podium of the weekend, started from fourth on the grid and in the early laps of the race, fell a few places back. However, he worked his way up and mid-way through the 15-lap race overtook Akhil Khushlani (IND/19/E-Rain Racing) for fourth and then moved into the final podium position after Ilyas struggled on Lap 11.

Formula BMW Junior Chris Wootton (AUS/20/Eurasia Motorsport) started Round 9 from 10th on the grid, but finished three places better in seventh. The runner-up in the 2008 Rookie Cup will look to further improve his position in Round 10, the final race of this weekend. Fellow Junior Steel Guiliana started and finished the race in eighth place, his best finish of the season thus far.

Haryanto’s teammate and compatriot, Dustin Sofyan (15) also enjoyed success in Round 9, with a fifth place finish. It is Sofyan’s sixth fifth-place finish of the season.

Round 10 will conclude the race meeting in Indonesia.

Drivers’ Quotes:

1st: Rio Haryanto: “There’s still one more race to go and I am looking to go out and win to complete a perfect weekend. I’m quite confident for the next race and I just have to focus and concentrate on not making a mistake. There has been a lot of pressure on me to win a race here. I managed to win three races, and that’s really what I wanted to achieve, so it would be great if I could do it one more time.”

2nd: Gary Thompson: “The third race was quite good for me and we drove with a lot of pace throughout the race. Then Rio came onto me and coming into Turn 1, he decided to use me as a brake instead of braking so that put me out really wide and I lost a lot of time and I never quite recovered from it. The car has been quite good this weekend and hopefully it will be better this afternoon.”

3rd: Axcil Jefferies: “I messed up on the third lap and it took some time for me to get back. It took time to overtake drivers like Dustin [Sofyan] and I was catching up quite quickly but in the end I was too far away to catch the leaders. I hope to get a good start in the next race and get a good pace. The track is holding up quite nicely and there is actually a lot of grip.”

Porsche Carrera Cup Asia
Sentul International Circuit, August 14-16, 2009
Results – Round 7

Avila takes second Porsche Carrera Cup Asia win.

Asia Racing Team’s Rodolfo Avila secured his second victory in the 2009 Porsche Carrera Cup Asia when the young Macanese driver won Round 7 at the Sentul International Circuit. Pole-sitter Christian Menzel of Team StarChase finished second, while GruppeM Racing’s Tim Sugden finished third.

In the non-professional Class B, Melvin Choo of Corum ThunderAsia Racing returned to winning form as the Singaporean took his first victory since May, after missing out on June’s two races in Zhuhai. Jacob&Co Racing driver Philip Ma was second, with Singaporean Yuey Tan of Team PCS Racing rounding out the podium.

While Sugden continues to lead the championship standings, Menzel has managed to close the gap to 10 points, with Team Jebsen driver Darryl O’Young third in the standings, 28 points behind the leader.

Avila made his one crucial move at the start of the 15-lap race, when Avila, who started on the first row with Menzel, overtook the experienced German to grab the lead. Avila did not relinquish the position and by the end of the race had built a comfortable lead. Sugden and O’Young jostled for the third and final podium position, with the Hong Kong driver coming close to the Briton. However, Sugden stayed out in front and finished about a second faster than the reigning Porsche Carrera Cup Asia champion.

Choo, who has won every Class B race he has competed in this year, did not disappoint in Round 7 and finished eighth overall. Ma got off to a fairly strong start, but said that he lacked the pace to keep up with Choo. Tan, having qualified behind Choo and Ma, said that his strategy was to chase the two Class B drivers ahead of him.

Porsche Carrera Cup Asia series guest driver, Ananda Mikola of Indonesia started and finished the race in fifth. The Humpuss Racing Team driver was making his debut in touring cars, having previously competed in Asian Formula 3, A1GP and Speedcar Series.

A smiling Avila said: “This win will help me a lot for the championship. I’m really happy to have won and maybe this will push me further for the next couple of rounds in Singapore. I hope I continue this momentum. I had a bit of an advantage because Tim [Sugden] and Chrstian [Menzel] didn’t have great starts. I took it from there and I managed to win the race.”

Menzel admitted that his start hindered him from catching Avila. “Avila was too quick today,” Menzel said. “But getting second is not so bad. By getting second, I get two more points more than Tim, which is good for the championship. You can be sure I will fight for every point.”

Sugden was frustrated with third place, adding that he too made a bad start in addition to Avila’s quickness. “Darryl O’Young was behind me and was having a go to overtake. Third place is okay, but it’s a new start tomorrow. Race conditions were so much better this afternoon than this morning. It’s a new start tomorrow.”

Class B winner Choo said that his start was “lucky” and then had a bit more good fortune in the early laps of the race.

“On turn one on the third lap, I went a bit wide, but managed to regain my composure,” Choo said. “I was trying to fend off Philip [Ma], trying to drive well and keep some distance between Philip and I.”

Round 8 will take place Sunday at the Sentul International Circuit as part of the Asian Festival of Speed.

Supporting the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia are two of the most recognised names in international motorsport, Mobil1 and Michelin. Mobil and Porsche have been partners since 1996. Close co-operation in research and development has led to every new Porsche engine being filled with Mobil1 high-performance lubricant. Porsche Carrera Cup Asia drivers also have the advantage of racing on cutting-edge tyres supplied by series partner Michelin. The consistent performance and leading technology of Michelin tyres constantly improve the performance of many teams in international motorsport. The partnership between Michelin and the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia has emerged from a worldwide agreement signed between Porsche AG and the Michelin group.

The Porsche Carrera Cup Asia is organised and promoted by Malaysian based Motorsport Asia Ltd.

Formula BMW Pacific Press Release

Date: August 15, 2009
Subject: Rounds 7&8 Results.

Double victories for Haryanto in Indonesia.

Sentul, Indonesia – Rio Haryanto (16/Questnet Team Qi-Meritus) continued his winning streak at the Sentul International Circuit, as the Indonesian scored two victories on his home circuit and has now won three Formula BMW Pacific races in a row. In Round 7, Haryanto fought a tight race with second place finisher Fahmi Ilyas (MAL/17/E-Rain Racing) and with Gary Thompson (IRL/17/E-Rain Racing) finishing third. In the following Round 8, it was Formula BMW Junior Axcil Jefferies (ZIM/15/Eurasia Motorsport) and Thompson who joined Haryanto on the podium.

For many of the drivers, this weekend’s races at the 3.960 km circuit located outside of Jakarta represent their first experiences on the track. Haryanto, however, was one of the few drivers who had some previous experience on the circuit and he certainly used his strength to his advantage.

Thompson continues to lead both the Drivers Classification and the Rookie Cup, although his lead has now shrunk to a single point. Haryanto is second in the Drivers Classification, while Jefferies is third, 20 points behind the leader.

In the earlier Round 7, Haryanto got off to a strong start. However, after a brief Safety Car period, Haryanto lost his position to Ilyas who was then able to put some distance between the two, before Haryanto regained his winning position near the end of the race.

In Round 8, Haryanto never relinquished his top position, leading from pole to chequered flag. From third on the grid, Jefferies made his way into the second, where he would stay for the remainder of the race. Ilyas, who had started in second, was penalized with a drive-through penalty for jumping the start and finished sixth overall.

Formula BMW Juniors Chris Wootton (AUS/20/Eurasia Motorsport) and Steel Guilana (AUS/17/Atlantic Racing Team) each had a bout of bad luck. Wootton made a mistake on Lap 4, putting himself out of the race. Guiliana, who had been running as high as fifth, spun on Lap Eight.

It was a successful race for Indonesian Dustin Sofyan (15/Questnet Team Qi-Meritus) who finished fifth in Round 8 after starting near the bottom of the grid.

Rounds 9 and 10 will take place Sunday as part of the Asian Festival of Speed.

Round 7 Quotes:

1st: Rio Haryanto: “It’s a significant moment for me because this is the first time I have won on my home track. To win pole position this morning and now to win the race is good for me. I still hope that we can keep going and win the remaining three races.”

2nd: Fahmi Ilyas: “Second place is still quite good. I’ll try to win the next race. We have a good car and I think I will be able to easily overtake Rio in the next race. I could win the next race. I was so close, but will depend on the performance of my tyres.”

3rd: Gary Thompson: “It was quite a good race for me. I managed to overtake Axcil on Turn Four after the Safety Car. But I couldn’t get near to Rio’s pace. He was too quick. I just played it safe and getting a podium finish is better than not finishing at all. The track was very dirty and there was gravel all over the place. Hopefully I’ll get another podium finish in my next race.”

Top Junior Axcil Jefferies: “The top three racers had a break from everyone else once the safety car came on. I found the track dirty and on the fourth lap, ran wide and dropped to ninth. I overtook the drivers lap by lap and one stage, the car was half a second faster than everybody else! We really had a good pace at this stage and I am relieved that we got fourth place.”

Round 8 Quotes:

1st: Rio Haryanto: “What a great weekend so far! I controlled the race from beginning to end and even though I made a bit of a mistake during the race, I still won and that’s good for the championship points. I’m definitely looking forward to tomorrow’s races and hopefully I will continue my good form.”

2nd: Axcil Jefferies: “Second was not something I was hoping for. I had bad luck in Round 7 and I am hoping for better luck tomorrow. I thought at one stage Rio [Haryanto] and I were evenly matched. Who knows? If we had more laps, I might have overtaken him, you never know!”

3rd: Gary Thompson: “To be honest, it was quite disappointing to finish third. I made a bad start and although I caught Fahmi [Ilyas], who blocked me for two laps, I couldn’t go any better. If I had a better start, I would have finished higher up. We’ll see how things go tomorrow.”

Formula BMW Pacific Press Release

QUOTE
Date: August 16, 2009
Subject: Rounds 10 Results.

Perfect weekend for Haryanto in Indonesia.

Sentul, Indonesia – It was an all-out perfect weekend for Rio Haryanto (INA/Questnet Team Qi-Meritus) as the 16-year old won pole position and then all four Formula BMW Pacific races held at the Sentul International Circuit. Finishing second in Round 10 was Formula BMW Pacific Junior Axcil Jefferies (ZIM/15/Eurasia Motorsport) who fought all race to finish one place better, while Rookie Cup leader Gary Thompson (IRL/17/E-Rain Racing) rounded out the podium.

Haryanto, who took over the Drivers Classification lead in Round 9, now leads Thompson by 12 points, while Jefferies is 22 points behind the leader. With five races left in the 2009, including two in support of the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix in September, the drivers in contention for the championship are sure to put in a spirited fight.

Having started from pole in each of the weekend’s three previous races, Haryanto did the same in Round 10 and led from pole to chequered flag. Jefferies was determined to finish better than his starting position and while the young Zimbabwean came within three-tenths of a second, he could not over take and finished 1.7 seconds off of first place.

Early in the race Fahmi Ilyas (MAS/17/E-Rain Racing) attempted to move past his teammate Thompson. However, a determined Thompson battled back and Ilyas fell behind. Ilyas finished the race in seventh.

Dustin Sofyan (INA/15/Questnet Team Qi-Meritus), who along with Haryanto was racing on his home circuit just outside of Jakarta, matched his best finish of the season and finished fourth, after starting fifth. Sofyan was pleased at his season-best result and said that he felt with time and experience he would be able to better his finishes and reach the podium.

Formula BMW Junior Chris Wootton (AUS/20/Eurasia Motorsport) also had his best finish of the weekend and finished in sixth position, five places ahead of where he started. Junior Steel Guiliana (AUS/18/Atlantic Racing Team) started and finished the race in tenth, after running into trouble early in the race.

With four rounds completed as part of the Asian Festival of Speed, the series now heads into an exciting autumn finale, first with races on the Marina Bay street circuit, followed by two races in support of the FIA World Touring Car Championship in Okayama, Japan. The season finale will take place on the Guia Circuit as part of the 56th Macau Grand Prix.

Drivers’ Quotes:

1st: Rio Haryanto: “There’s nothing better than the feeling I have right now. I hope in Singapore I will have the same performance and I am quite confident for the Singapore races seeing that my car was fantastic here. I am happy about the championship lead, but there’s still a long way to go and I’m not thinking about taking the title yet because anything can happen.”

2nd: Axcil Jefferies: “I had a great start for the race and I managed to put the pressure on Rio. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get past him, but I am getting closer and closer to him with every race. ”

3rd: Gary Thompson: “I am a bit disappointed. I expected to at least get one win this weekend, but it didn’t quite come around. I guess you have to be positive considering we didn’t have much pace throughout the races. Four podiums is quite good. Third is an okay result, but I am looking forward to Singapore where anything can happen.”
