A1 Team Malaysia hosted its third annual karting event at the Elite Speedway PLUS karting circuit this weekend, with team drivers, invited guests and fans enjoying a highly competitive and enjoyable day of karting.

The surprise racing star of the day was Nazrul Izham, from the Malay Mail who took third place on the podium on Sunday He was beaten by A1 Team Malaysia driver, Aaron Lim, who emerged as the champion. Nik Iruwan took the runner up slot after a series of closely fought races.

Elite Speedway PLUS, owned by A1 Team Malaysia commercial partner, PLUS Expressways, was the venue for the event and it proved a worthy setting for the fierce on-track battles. The karts were supplied by Lim’s family business, RL Karting, with top class catering being provided by the restaurant of team mechanic, Tomy Mathen George, keeping everyone well fed. Lunch and breakfast was washed down with liberal quantities of Spritzer mineral water, another brand that supported the event.

The event, jointly organised and promoted with www.my-kart.org and www.pitstop.com.my, attracted over 30 entries, with the websites securing plenty of interest and support.

A1 Team Malaysia team members Azrai Razuan and Hairul Ezwan flew the flag for A1 Team Malaysia alongside Lim. Invited drivers included current leader of the Malaysian and Asian Rotax Max Junior Championship, Nabil Jeffri, Iruwan, two PLUS-supported foreign exchange students (one from Germany and one from Tasmania) and of course representatives from the media.

Everyone enjoyed watching the top karters dicing for position, although Jeffri was unlucky to have technical problems in the finals. Lim and Iruwan provided the onlookers with plenty of wheel-to-wheel action as they fought intensely for the victory. In the final few laps it was Lim that pipped Iruwan to the flag to take the top honours.

No one left empty handed as each participant received a small memento of the day in the form of a small medal as well as a copy of the A1 Team Malaysia Season 4 Review DVD.

Lim said of taking victory, “There was plenty of pride at stake in today’s event and I was determined to prove that I’m a tough racer, not only in the A1GP series, but in all forms of competitive racing. Nik didn’t make it easy for me all day, and there were moments when I thought he was going to beat me, but I managed to use my experience to make sure I took the chequered flag before anyone else. It was a very enjoyable day for everyone!”

Owen Leed, Commercial Director, A1 Team Malaysia said of the event, “Everyone enjoyed a great day of racing at the Elite Speedway today and as with all the events that we stage, we had fantastic support from our commercial partners and fans. We would like to thanks PLUS Expressways for providing the Speedway PLUS facility today and Spritzer for their continued support and loyalty at all of these events that we take part in. We always appreciate the opportunities to bring the team closer to the fans and today is no exception. It should come as no surprise that Aaron and Nik took the number 1 and 2 slots. However, all of the participants had a great time racing against them as well as Nabil Jeffri and I am certain that everyone will have learned a trick or two today from them.”

A1 Team Malaysia is preparing for the fifth season of competition which starts in October this year, with the series’ first visit to Surfers Paradise, Australia.

Had great fun that day.

Heard the lamb for lunch was good but sadly I didn't try it, too afraid that my stomach will be too full for the finals as i'm already heavier than the 7 (except Luen of kart no.3) of the finalist by about 15kg. smile_tongue.gif

Sadly Nabil got a lousy kart, or else the race could end up with a closely fought 3-way or maybe 4-way fight.
