the acces point belongs to a higher learning institute.
i hav to enter username and password on their homepage b4 i can use the net.
i believe its nothing to do with my browser setting.

Don't think it is really the access point. It is basic authentication by the server. It is just the same as when u need to login to your ISP. The college would be stupid if it did not have some security.

FYI, WEP is only secure for at least 2-3 minutes
WPA n WPA2 can be own by using couple of method, some involving a rainbow table
but using one's network without authorization is a violation under Act 588
