I have owned an Elise for the past 7 years and really there is little to complain about in terms of reliability. The engine has never experienced any faults even though through countless hours on the track. The only common problems are the alternator and the fan motors in front. The tend to wear out due to the heat but again its not something serious that it fails every year. In the 7 years those items failed me only once.
You shouldn't restrict your search to 2002 model year. All of the cars from 1999 and 2005 are the same but just different year of manufacture.
Good luck on your search. The Elise is an incredible machine.

The Elise is a sports car. Proton (through the subsidiary Lotus Cars Malaysia) has got enough parts and supplies to maintain and repair all cars here in Malaysia.
All you need to do is book your car in for servicing in the Shah Alam branch.
There is an active Lotus Elise club in Malaysia, and there are many club members here as well. Check out the website at http://lotuscarsclubmalaysia.com/
Oh, and don't worry about owning one, cos if you have the dough to buy it, no need to worry about the dough to maintain it.
