Hi Justin,

Be glad to help you with the requested information.

I bought the car since year 2000 second hand from an insurance agent
(kurnia), white colored wira at the price RM22K and being financed by Hong
Leong for 5 years (settled)

My daily traveling consumption requires me to travel from Shah Alam to PJ
everyday (about 40 km one way) . So going back and forth is about 80km ++
and my wife share the car with me and she takes over the car from me to
drive within KL to do her sales work around 40 km+ from PJ. I always pay
about RM 20 ringgit(not full tank) for diesel fuel within every 2 days for
my daily usage (not counting if I have extra cost for other traveling
needs). The rule of thumb here is always drive at average of 80 km/h in
order to get full optimum mileage fuel usage.

Just this month I have settled my road tax is about RM 400 a year and I
took 3rd party insurance for RM80 a year.

I used to have black smoke coming a lot from exhaust pipe and as a result
of that by back end of the car usually becomes black. Now I have asked my
mechanic in to modified my direction of my tail pipe to face down to the
road and turned left. The back end of the car is no longer get smoked now.
And earlier this year I have serviced my diesel engine and I have my
mechanic to tune down the black smoke by reducing my diesel fuel take up
intake making less power.

Yes less power than before and this help me save fuel consumption and
reduce unwanted black smoke now.

Earlier in the years I had a lot of major problems, like engine block
failure, rocker arm broken, clutch pump keep losting pressure, clutch
failure, alternator issue, starter and some electrical like power.
Fortunately, all problems didn`t come all at once. So I threat all problem
as a point of learning and I made a point to be close friends of my
mechanic and these combination has help a lot to deal with the challenges
of getting through the problem of the car.

I take pride of my mechanical work that is everything is in working order,
including my air conditioning as cool as ever.

I believe that to love your car is to take good car of it`s internal system
first than alter years of endurance usage, then I will focus on the external.

The car was quite beat up when I first got it. Slowly, I am getting the car
painted and replace the physical wear and tear. It is life long restoration
process.

If you like to see me and the car, you are welcome to do so and I can
always share with you all my glory and tears about my wonderful work horse
97 Wira diesel.

Hi,

I saw your posting at the Motor Trader Forum about the Diesel Wira.

What`s the fuel consumption like?

How much is the road tax?

Does the exhaust emit a lot of black smoke currently?

Any major problems with the car?

You reply would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

Thank you for your feedback.

Yes, I am glad to share with you all my experience about getting diesel car
with you. Yes a new car is always better but since the fuel price will go
up again, Diesel engine car is good alternative, not to mention that
biodiesel is another alternative to go for and Malaysia grow their own Bio
Diesel from Palm Oil industry. Of course you can go for the option of NGV
in a petrol car but still, NGV station are still limited to town area and
if you go outstation, you better off with diesel cars. BTW NGV upgrade will
cost from RM 3K to 5K depending on your fuel system (carborator or fuel
injestion)

Yes about your assumption about my fuel expense for a month it is ruffly
about that but I do travel a lot especially some weekend to PD and going
around PJ and KL on other weekends.

Just to share with you that I also maintain another wira 1995 1.5L (A) and
I agree with you that the car drank petrol like water.

The Roadtax used to be RM 800 a year during my early days of using the
diesel car but the ratio of the roadtax cost was still alright compared to
the price of diesel fuel that time which was much lower.

Just like to correct you, Diesel 2.0 has more horse power than 1.3 L car.
The issue is acceleration. The diesel car acceleration is slower than their
petrol siblings. This is where the turbo will be help to increase
acceleration. When I mentioned about I tuned down my power is because that
I had seen how of untuned diesel engine behaves. Yes it had a lot of power
and it made a lot of smoke and will drank diesel fuel just like petrol too.
For that reason, I think it was not worth it.

About the 3rd party insurance is about you having insurance just to cover
the party that you hit and not our own car. If you have an expensive car,
then you need to buy a first party insurance because that will cover both
your car and the hit vehicle party. Of course the insurance for first party
will be higher. About 5% of your car's price in market value(ruffly). But
if you being paying insurance and never claim, you will be entitle for some
discounts before you renew your insurance.

My wira did inherit the problem that you mentioned like power windows and
rust. But you should worry too much about that, main thing is what can you
do in order to work out the problem with the least amount of money and
tackle one problem at a time.

Yes, I would love to get a Turbo engine Diesel car too which is the export
grade car but during the time I was shopping for the car, the availability
was rare and I don't have much choice.

Since you are in Shah Alam, I be happy to show my car to you. From a
glance, my car may look unattractive cause I don't spend much money on the
new paint job or nice seat and interior fixes. I am planing to work that
problem too later on. But I will show the engine and high light the issue
that you need to know if you are willing to invest on Wira Diesel cars.

You are always welcome to ask for more.

Thanks

Hi Khairul,

Thank you for taking time to reply. I appreciate it very much.

First of all, I'd like to tell you a bit about myself. I'm studying and
working part time. This will be my first time buying a car so I'm pretty
clueless about the road tax, insurance, maintenance, etc.

So your daily consumption is 40(to) + 40(back) + 40(wife) = 120km X
2days. That would make approx. 240km for RM20 of petrol?

I'm currently driving a '98 1.5L Wira (A) and the fuel consumption is
terrible. Driving conditions are a mixture of city and highway. I share car
with my brother so I can't control his driving habits. The bottom point is,
I get less than 10km/litre. It's almost like RM50 for 250km. I travel to
Shah Alam often from Cheras (where I stay currently) and thus I maintain
cruising speed at 80-100kph. My 3-speed automatic Wira drinks fuel like
running tap water. At 80kph, rev can almost hit 3000rpm.

Wira diesel is a reliable car and suitable for taxi driver. Another
alternative to wira diesel is citroen xantia diesel. Reliable car.

In my area, more taxi driver opt for it to fetch passenger.

Guys,

Is Wira Diesel a "green diesel" engine? Thanks.
