Hi all, i believe this subject has been addressed before, however i do
have some other questions before taking the leap of purchasing a S40.

My budget is actually below 70K, what are the model actually available
for my budget. I understand 2001 S40's are better than the pre-decessor
as some of the sifu's have said. I dont think i can get a 2001 model for
less than 70K.

Some other questions :-

1) How is this car gearbox, does it gives problem like audi b5 model
does ?
2) What are other tear and wear besides the suspension system ? ie.
Timing belts, etc ?
3) The fuel regulator issue does cause some concerns in me. Having the
car stall immitently is pretty scary, can we actually solve this problem
once and for all ?
4) I saw that, there is a 120K(mileage) schedule maintenance to be
carried out. What are the maintenance comprises ? Its pretty expensive la.
5) Anyone has pictures of their cars, preferably with big wheels and some
mods, pls do send it over, i would like to see the extent of this car
being modified(outlook)
6) Last but not least....anyone selling !??!?!?!

Cheers !

1) the volvo gear box are much better than A4... so far seldom heard
any problem here or aboard , P/S : although i never own a A4 before.

2)Engine mounts, Brake pads& disc ( as turbo are too pawer ) are
most common fast tear & wear , others is normal .

3) The Fuel presure regulator is more on design issue, i think ,
unless you can source the after marker replacement part....

4) 120K Km maintenance is more on Timing Belt, bearing,....+
normal replacement, actually if you known the source of CHEAP OEM
parts & good ex - volvo mechanic , you will save lots of $$$$$

5) for the Mod S/V40 , you should log in the below wedsite, you will
see all kinds of stock - mid mod. & heavy mod.

6) actually you can see a phs1 S40 on sale on the autoworld use
cars section , i think is around +-6x

Thanks dude.

The one on sale in the autoworld is a 2000 model. Do you know how much
does a 2001 cost or a 2000 turbo model cost?

Cheers ?

richard

just heads up to you. ended up bringing the car to FA, who ran it through
their diagnostics. couldn't detect anything wrong with my '01 v40 but
they went ahead to clean the throttle body & loaded a new software map
(?). not quite sure what it does, even the FA techs couldn't really
explain it but per my understanding it also included some minor fine
tuning - revised ignition maps etc.

end result car did feel smoother, power delivery is now more linear than
before. touch wood, no stalling yet. this was 2-3 weeks ago. might have
cured the problem, i'm keeping my fingers crossed. best of all, FA didn't
charge me anything.

wanted to thank you for your pointers. thanks again.

Good to known you car is back to normal and great to known FA are
more customer friendly now - FOC for the service !!!! can't believe it as
this would't happen on few years back...

from your desription seem like they are troubleshooting on. your
Engine Management System
they are reloaded a new engine management software to your ECU
to replaced your "suspected" corrupted software, therefore you got a
"virgin" soft ware that included the original setting of ignition system,
air intake,/vaccum system, injection system ......

Care to share which SC of FA you go ?

Interesting. I took my S40 to the mechanic under a TREE and he also did
the same using his computer notebook ie. reloaded new engine management
software. There was no specific charges on this service but I supposed it
must have been included as part of the labour costs.

With regards to those indicators that come on and off for no apparent
reasons, do you guys think it has anything to do with the way we switch
on the ignition? I mean the way we turn the key before the engine
management system comes to life?

did recall them saying something about corrupted software. they had a
cable connected to the car under the steering wheel & downloaded the new
parameters. wife thinks (she drives it everyday) fuel economy has
improved somewhat though she reckons the car is less powerful than before
as she still can't get used to the smoother & more linear power delivery.

we went to FA in brickfields, that was the closest to where we stay.

Wo....mechanic under the tree got computer notebook diagnostics
...this is very advanve "under the tree" mechanic oaaaaaa......care to
share where is this "unde rthe tree" mechanic ?

Is good point you bring it out here. as read on many posted said you
should position your key at position ll and wait for all the lights on
your meter is go off and only crank the key to start the engine. as this
pratice will allow the engine management to do self checking on all
electronic componets before the engine is on....but dunno how much
it help on the problems ....
