volvo 850 vs 940

depends on what you look for (maintenance, resale value, power, safety,
prestige,..?). volvo is of different category compared with japs. please
don't compare a volvo with a van.
driving in avanza is just like any tom, dick or harry. a small accident
involved an avanza can cause big tragedy. so it's still worth paying a
little more on maintenance to get much extras out from volvo.
just my 2cts.

can outlast most Japs. It's a simple engine/turborised which sure beats
the Avanza in power and at the same time give you better proctection
during mishaps. I'm not sure if the Avanza has ABS and this helps during
One thing about the Volvo is the fuel consumption. My driving takes 25
cents for every km travelled but I don't usually hold back my right foot
and with the power and stability plus safety offered, I'm not complaining.
If you use cars mainly for town communing and travel alot in traffic jams,
the Avanza would be more suitable. Being new, you also won't need to
change the major parts upon getting the car. Car thieves would target the
Avanza more though, so be prepared to fork out more on the theft
protection gadgets (though most would say it's useless 90% most of the
time). That's being said, do you feel unsafe when you park your car during
shopping, movies, etc ? Will you have peace of mind and enjoy life rather
than always looking over your shoulder and see if your car is still there
after walking away from the parking lot? We don't face that problem with
Resale value for the Japs would be certainly higher but how much can you
loose summore if you get a 940 now and sell it in 5 years time ? The
amount lost would be the same as parting with the Avanza during the same
time down the road. So your only decision now would be based on the
running cost - petrol, road tax, maintenance (I spend less than 150 for a
5k km service - semi-sync oil/filter/etc) and tires.

Yup, the 940 is really worth it. I've just done the silicon hoses like
yours and is waiting for the PU bushings for the alternator. I was offered
very reasonable prices for a 1997-850GLE and V70-T5 but thinking back what
I went through last time, I would say the 940 should suffice for the
