I was just surfing brickboard.com and I was wondering if Federal Auto has
ever issued a recall for any Volvos in this country. There seem to be a
number overseas. Surely Malaysian Volvos would be affected too. The one
that interested me was a recall on 850s to fix a fuel tank before it could
leak because my 940 had a tank leak some time ago.

HI
My father has a 96' volvo 940GL soft Turbo. He recently sent the car to
swedish marquee for the volvo essential service. Upon checking the
receipt theres a replacement on the EL fan wiring harness price at
RM150++ and its free of charge. I think they have some recall and not
announcing it.
I would surely recommend the service as the car felt alot better then
before but I till dunno what they've done.
I drove his car regularly as if I was the chauffer >(

This is a typical problem of all dealers, they are entrusted with
divulging information as they see fit for their particular market...so
when a dealer in Japan lets say, contacts volvo owners for an electrical
fan problem as part of a world wide recall, the dealer here can sit back
and only do those that visit his premises...nothing wrong with that law
wise but it does suck customer/owner wise.
The best way around this problem is to search other web sites looking for
info for your articular model...then armed with the relevant information
at least you can take thye dealer to task.
here are a couple of sites that are great for finding out relevant recall
info and technical bulletins:
http://alldata.com
Do S80 owners out there know that Volvo Cars Malaysia are replacing
transmission control valves etc at half price as a measure of
goodwill...basically they acknowledge that the transmissions on some
units do have upshift faults like hard shifting, jerky shifting from 2nd
to 3rd and also downshift between the same gears!
This way of doing business is not only Volvo's,but most of the industry
major players.

Kaminski, I don't have hard shifting up or down 3/2 gear. Sent my s80 for
75k service recently. They didn't do anything about the transmission
valves. They however replaced the E fan free of charge as a so called free
upgrade after many attempts to get them to admit to the recent worldwide
recall due to faulty fan. They also replaced the front links for free.
Wonder when they are going to be honest with themselves and us the must
have volvo type.

S80, maybe your transmission is one of those that is okay...on mine it
experienced a harsh upshift betwen 2nd and 3rd at around 65000Km...they
flushed the system for me and the problem went away until recently(at
82000km)...but by then I had discovered that there were several software
upgrades for certain S80,s that were designed to overcome this
transmission fault..in fact in the US some owners were taking Volvo to
court using their Lemon laws..I beleive that three new software patches
were used by Volvo to try and compensate this fault...apparently in the
end they have come to the conclusion that the upshift valve solonoid and
body valve group should be replaced to erradicate this problem,so as a
gesture of goodwill to those owners that are experiencing this
intermitttant fault,Volvo are prepared to to cover 50% of the cost of
replacement(approx RM4800).
The links they changed for free was good of them, but if I remember
correctly these were part of a recall in the States as well as the UK.How
long ago I can't remember!
My whole point was that in general, dealer receive lots of TB's per month
that cover most models, all it takes when you take your car there for
whatever service is to cross check your vehicle VIN with the TB's and
inform you that some upgrades are available for your model, and as a
gesture for your continued support stuff like software upgrades should be
done for free and maybe discounts on other parts as needed....but most
dealers will do nothing unless you persist you have a problem.
In the UK I have a BMW 740,1998 and a common problem with these is that
the electronic pixels on the display instrument cluster fade out until
you can no longer read them...in the States BMW America admitted this
fault and did a free of charge replacement for owners with cars built
1996 on.....in the UK BMW UK will not admit fault and still charge owners
400 pounds plus for a replacement...thats how these companies operate
from country to country...in America they have a sue you culture where as
here and in the Uk,we don't....go figure!
With every car I have owned I always browse around for info as it always
comes in handy later when you are facing a problem...its harder for them
to fob you off if you know some background facts!

Will AB Volvo Sweden deal directly with the consumers or will they refer
them to the dealers ?
them to the dealers ?

Chances are that they will refer you to the dealers since AB Volvo Sweden
is far, far away. Of course, AB Volvo Sweden will provide the technical
backup to the dealers.
