My ABS is not working- mechanic say change module- original about 3k. However,
he recommend recon- type. About 600 only.

Of course the difference in price is attractive. But to me (correct me if i am wrong),
ABS is something you dont use everyday but once you need it (slam brakes), it
better be working because lives depend on it!

So, can anyone share their comments/knowledge/feedback on recon- ABS?

You didn't mentioned what year or model but have you checked with your
trusty parts shop.

No disrespect to your mechanic but I have come across workshops marking up
ABS modules 100% more and then some. If I recall new ones can be had for
less than $1000 depending on which models of course. Suprisingly I was
told that volvo ABS modules are cheaper than Perdana's.

discusman, have you checked with glock19? May be a worthwhile thing to do
& he may be able to help you. My Ipoh mechanic said that the module can be
repaired but you'll need special equipment to open the unit. Good luck.

if not, i will email him personally. thanks.

If the original module can be repaired, that will be a plus point.

Hi All,
I guess everyone is waiting for some move from my side on this topic. A
bit of history, I started looking into this ABS issue when I got the 850
and since the fault exist, I went high and low looking for some rebuilt
and even enquired about new units. With the exhorbitant price tag
attached to the new unit and the doubts of have local rebuilt (just like
Discusman), I went about acquiring damaged units to work on. My present
mechanic was kind and generous enough to me for letting me operate on some.

Initial work was tedious and damaged were done on the casing and the board
in my quest to repair them. Success finally came and I was the first to
try out my own rebuilt. The ABS lamp went of a few metres after rolling of
the garage but I couldn’t bring myself to let the car skid. My MICHELINS
are new and road was dry, so have to wait till I’m in a cemented car park
(wet ones should be nice). Eventually before I could test it out, I
repaired a few for my mechanic and he reported that the test were
positive, so it never occurred to me to try it out myself, pity the car
too :D

So far, I’ve repaired more than 10 pcs, some are the 850R (With TRACS-10
solenoids) and some with 8 solenoids (I think the newer V/S series). Ours
is the 6 solenoids type. Apart from my mechanic here, I have another
customer in Cheras, KL who’s sending me the ABS module every alternate
week. So far, my record has been good. In terms of pricing, I charge the
KL guy twice of what I get here in Penang, there are some reasons to it as
I need to test it and then post it during my working hours, so a bit
inconvenient for me. Moreover, my mechanic has been a great help and he
supplied some units for spare parts too.

Both of these guys do not ‘chase’ me too much and thus I can spread the
repair time over 3~4 days, which is good for me. For instances, I get the
part in the evening after work, do my own things, family and by 9pm I’ll
start opening the part up. 3 hours I would have the thing cleaned after
the ‘operation’ and I’ll call it a night. The next day after work, I’ll do
the repairs and try to finish before midnight so that I can set the
sealing epoxy overnight, if not, the epoxy will take another evening. So 3
days for me to wrap it up (at the most) in good time.

In terms of manhours, that’s nearly a one day shift for me. So I’m
actually not slaughtering them (if they don’t push me for delivery) and
since they give me a regular supply of work, it’ll do good to my wallet
also. As I don’t do dismantling or installing for their customers, that’ll
save me some work & time too.

Discusman, in your case, I’ll settle for half of what the mechanic charges
you (including fixing) but you’ll have to down your car for the weekend.
Let’s say on Friday night, I take it out (please ensure your engine is
cool), open and clean on Friday itself. Saturday full day on it and on
Sunday, I’ll have it fixed back into your car by noon/evening (depends on
Church service). Actually according to some (even mechanics), the car can
be driven without the ABS but I haven’t tried it before. One thing
different from getting it from the shop is that, you’ll be getting
somebody else ABS and yours will be passed to another (exchange basis) but
for me, you’ll get back your own but repaired. However they have it ready
and you don’t need to down your car. Again this depends on whether you
want to drive without the ABS.

For others (those outstation guys), you can send me the unit through
POSLAJU (it’s safe- don’t worry) and I’ll return you the same way. Please
include a cheque with the unit. If it doesn’t work, you can expect a full
refund including the postage.
If you want it repaired for free, please send two units and you’ll get one
back, meaning – I’m willing to buy one off you as I might need the spare
parts sometimes. Anyone who come across these (damaged ones) are also
encourage to approach me.

Okay, so much for sales talk. Better stop here before the Admin cy tint aHi All,

Got a used unit from the Potong shop today, was with Kenari1 and Kenari2
(hehehe), so I might be able to do it faster for you on an exchange basis
but give me some time to work on it first. It looks good but I still need
to go to the entire procedure to be sure.
