uncle vol940,

i suspected that the high temperature and hot start are separate problem..
i tested today, if the engine idle without aircond, the temperature didn't
increase.. the temperautre will increase just when aircond is ON..

i may have to make my prob clear, its not the 'hot weather' that result in
hot start, but 'hot engine temp'... no matter how hot is the weather, i can
still start the engine with one crank only with condition that the engine
didn't overheat...

no.... we dont have radiator CAP... could it be the 'never been cleaned'
radiator?? the radiator had been untouched from 16 years ago, just got
coolant flushed when change the water pump years ago....

Hi all,
My 1986, 240 with Pierburg Carb is facing the similar problem.
I agreed with some of the members comments that runing lean will cause
high temperature.I think its a leaking vacuum line some where, by the way
my A/c duct flaps switchs operates by vacuum too.
I am still troubleshooting, like pluging each vacuum lines from the inlet
manifold.( one at a time).
Robin.

zhafri, is normal for engine to run hotter with A/C on becuase the A/C
condenser in the front generate heat. I think your 240 is running on a
clutch fan but I am not sure if there is a electric fan in front for your
rediator ?? you can make your car much much more lighter to drive by
changing to electric fan. I think the aircon shop can do it for you. I got
a friend who had a hot start problem on his 940GL N/A, he spend lots
oftime fixing it but in the end he found out it was the ECU that need to
go. As I said try check your ignition power stage first.

A carb version does not have the ignition power stage so most likely is
the carb that cause the difficult start when it hot.

SA6,
mine do not have the electric fan..could there be any possibilities of
clogged(kotor) radiator and condenser?? aircon man said nothing wrong with
the aircon system... maybe radiator and condenser fins kotor?? because they
never been cleaned for past 16 years....

i once heard that the system will automatically disable us to restart the
engine if engine temp is high... i am not sure about this... anyone can
rectify this??.... huhuhuh....

You can always try to flush you radiator by yourself at home if you
suspect clogged radiator and for the radiator fins, try ask the car wash
people to spray the water from inside out of the radiator, the dirt,
sands, insect, etc would wash off easily. By the way don't forget to check
your themostate too...if this broken the temp will raise..

Very seldom I heard VOlvo car runs overheat !! the clutch fan are large
and strong enough to cool the radiator is just few minutes, just step on
your gas while stand still or while stop traffic light. You could hear the
fan noice....tha just notice the temp, it should be at the cooling temp.

About your question, the engine would not start if the temp goes beyond
too hot, the temp pointer usually get close to the red zone. For the car
which has a temp sensor that link to the ECU, it is the ECU that will
prevent the car to restart if it goes beyond the hot limit temp.

zhafri, hv you check the front side of the radiator whehter got electric
fan ?? there should be one for the aircon, otherwise the air is not that
cold.

Just out of curiosity...do the 240's have a hot start valve? I can't
remember thats why I ask...I do remember that they caused a few venting
problems causing cars not to start in very hot conditions...basically it
caused an over rich mixture. Its a canister type thingie and I am sure it
used to be located near the front right strut on older 240 models..or am
I barking up the wrong tree here??
