My family used to own a Landcruiser years back. If memory serves, to pre-
heat, you turn the key in the ignition clockwise (but not far enough to
crank the motor) until you hear a springy-click sound and the pre-heat
light comes on. You hold it in that position until the pre-heat light
goes off, and then you continue turning the ignition key all the way to
crank the engine to start.

Yes Archimedes, I was thinking somewhere along those lines too, thanks. I
will have to check it out when I go home tonight. I doubt the previous
owner has removed it, if it was auto. I am interested toknow what
the 'pull knob' would be for just to the left of the FILTER/PRE-HEAT
lamps.

Can't help you there, sorry... closest I can think of (and I'm just
shooting in the dark!) is that it might be the choke. I'll take a look
into a LC if I see one parked, and see if I can shed any light on it
another time soon.

LOl, I also think its the choke! The sign is worn on it, but its the only
logical thing it can be really!

Pre-Heater problem solved, turn the ignition key untill the pre-heat
light comes on, when it goes off..FIRE The Engine.
Choke? This is the first time I have owned a deisel. My friend who mabe
considered as a landcruiser expert tells me its the choke!

I can't see how a choke would work in a diesel engine. A choke is
supposed to cover the venturi in a carburettor, causing the main jets to
draw in more fuel for starting or when the engine is cold.
In a diesel, the whole point is to delay the introduction of fuel into
the engine when cold, because there may not be enough heat from the
pressurized air for combustion.
This is just from what I was able to find out on the 'net, so maybe
someone could clarify, or correct any error(s) on my part?

This thing gives a set engine speed if certain extras, winch, are fitted.
This is not a choke.,
