UJs is located at both your front and rear propoeller shafts. For the
front shaft, UJ is located nearer to the front axle but for the rear
shaft it is located nearer to the trnasfer box. It is one of the most
worn components (designed to be).

kalau u rajin, read up previous thread in this forum written by
bumibersih, he mention abt prices for some of the item if u want a guide
price, also for another shop contact in subang jaya.
uj ni, ko tengok bawah lori senang sikit, shaft yang berpusing tu, sebelah
depat n belakang dia (per aadnana reply) is the uj. supposed to be greased
often but its not.
anyway, i just wonder why do u want to replace the engine? i thought that
35k is because it already have a toyota engine, else u can get it cheaper.

Next, my considering changing out the engine. We had originally planned
to get a Rangie with a stock V8, and then swap the engine to a diesel,
since the road tax and insurance would be cost prohibitive, even in
Sarawak. When I found this Rangie, already with a Toyota engine in it, we
figured, good deal! we'll just try that for a while and see how we like
it. It's definitely cheaper than the V8, but in Sarawak, the best is to
have a diesel IMHO.
I'm probably going to just keep the Toyota engine in there for now, and
see if I can work out the problem of no handbrake and an inaccurate
speedometer (after sorting out the steering problem, I mean). Eventually,
though, I'm probably going to want to go with the Toyota 1KZ turbo diesel.
I heard that shop in Kuching I mentioned before has done this several
times. Apparently, there's a group of guys there that like Rangies, but
can't live with the V8s, so they have the engine swapped out at this
shop. I have to find out more, of course, but I'm hoping that they can
get everything else to work fine when they do the swap i.e. handbrake,
speedometer, turn it back to a 4WD (mine's a 2WD now), etc. I know this
is not really necessary given that we bought the Rangie for comfortable,
long distance road (no highways in Sarawak) driving, but I'd still like
to have 4WD for the Rangie.
Also, 35K is way cheaper than these things are going for in Sarawak, so
when I saw it, I jumped at it. If I'd known that I could get them
cheaper, I would have waited. I saw a couple in Motor Trader website that
are going for 25K now. *sigh!*

i think this will be a "bit" difficult. i believe those conversion is like
the one done to bumibersih rr. basically they reuse the rr gear/transfer
box, thus keeping the original speedo drive, 4wd & handbrake. what they do
is make an adaptor to connect that engine output shaft to the rr gearbox
input shaft.
unless the toyota engine/gearbox is similar to rr config (i dunno how that
toyota engine/gbox look like) u will need to aquire a rr gear/transfer box.

why not sell off your rr or trade it with that 25k rr + some money coz
your toyota engine is highly desireable to some ppl

engines need to be mated to the correct transmission, else the ECU (I
think?) will have problems. Is that the case here? Do you know if the 1KZ
engine can be connected to the RR gear/transfer box through this adapter,
without problems?
As for selling off my RR, I might just do that after I've thoroughly
looked into this conversion. I need to find the time to go to that shop
in Kuching and talk to them. I'm thinking seriously about this, though,
given that I was just told that gas prices are rising AGAIN come 1 Nov.
One other factor is that other than this situation with the motor, my RR
is SWEET! The condition of the seats, upholstery, body, etc. is pristine,
especially after I poured RM3k to have the front two seats and the
steering wheel (which were a bit worn) refurbished with new leather, and
had the whole ceiling upholstery replaced. Given that added expenditure,
I'd have to ask for a bit more to sell it, and I'm not sure people would
pay the extra cost. This thing also rides on Koni shocks and Kingmax (I
think) springs, so the ride is stiffer. It sort of compensates for the
body roll, which isn't too bad.

mentioned on bumibersih rr is for manual transmission. not sure abt auto,
but for carb conversion to v8 there is a "kickback" linkage or something
for downshifting when u floor it for overtaking, better ask that kuching
workshop.

Managed to wangle a business trip to KL this week, so I want to take care
of that steering damper replacement. So I can get one from the shops you
told me about; how about where I can actually get the work done? Any
suggestions? What about this Ismail guy at the Mobil workshop on Jln.
Universiti?
Also, I read somewhere that you can use Bilstein dampers instead of the
original stock Range Rover one. Is that one better?

much trouble. if u buy the replacement unit yourself n have no access to
basic tool i strongly believe any workshop can do it for u. erm wait a
minute, i think rr unit differ from defender (i got a 110, its in front,
rr one is much further back iirc), i'll have a look at the workshop manual
n report back if 'm free.
as to workshop, bumibersih should be able to advice u better, do tell
when will u be around? maybe i can contact him before that.
as to damper, try www.lrom.com.my, there is a recent thread abt shock
absorber.

a day or so, and the car is at my brother-in-law's place. I might not
even have time to get it done on this trip. I'll want to get the damper
at least, and see if I can squeeze in the time to get it done.
Don't have tools to do this myself in KL, unfortunately.
I'll be in KL longer from 19 Nov. onwards. Maybe then I can get some
info. on workshop(s)?
I did try to get in touch with bumibersih at his e-mail addy, which is
somewhere in this forum, but I haven't heard from him. Is he around?
I'll check out lrom. Thanks again!
