Greetings,

Moat, well, probably serious works would include major repairs like
engine overhaul or body parts replacement... there ain't many classics
around, let alone in the chop shops. Still, it's kinda expensive (4wd
normally more expensive to maintain, right?) to maintained (petrol...) but
not that expensive. My estimate is that you should be earning min RM3.5K
to drive such cars. And pray that you dun get a lemon. But then, the ride -
you gotta fork out a bit for a luxury standard ride, I suppose.

Frankly, I dunno how long the absorbers or bushings will last cos the car
didn't live long enuff (accident). Guess, if you install the gas, it would
last longer cos body roll is quite pronounced on RR classics (save the
models from '92..I think - they come with anti-sway bars standard). Would
wear down the abs faster. There's one quite known brand (gas) - Gabriel.
Would cost RM 165/pc.

Ok, not the one I mentioned. Hmmm, I'd like to take a look at that car.
So, it's along the RRI route, eh? I'd would not be able to buy it, yet.
Insurance money still not available yet. Neeway, if I have the money, I'd
go fer my friend's. It's 92 model.

btw moat, road tax 2.4l diesel (VM engine) costs about RM3k. Remember,
yr'89 still not yet green engine.

Cheers

Hey dudes just wanna ask your opinion. I thought of changing my absorbers
in the near future but not to sure what to get.
Anyway u mentioned Gabriel Ryder, seems pretty reasonable on my Daihatsu
Rocky but i hopped to get some absorber that is reasonably price that has
slighty more aggresive damping aka stiffer, better rebound
characteristics.
What do u think would be the price and performance of say a Bilstein,
Koni or Monroe?
Do u think will the price be around the same as the Gabriel?
Oh well.

Oh btw Adlan,
wonder if u be interested in a Range Rover SE that is going for 25-30k?
I heard it is running a 3.9 litre but registered as a 3.5 litre.
Seems that this chap by the name of Harith Merican from that Mobil
station is trying to sell it off. Hehe.
At the same time i wonder if u can try asking this workshop in Sunway
next to Garang Auto. There is this nice looking LSE wanting some love and
affection. Seems that probably it is parked there coz the suspension is
KO.

bb, (i hope u dun mind me use short form)
hmmmm the body parts is a bit worrysome due non avilability of parts,
aluminium is not easy to work with, if like defender then its ok due to
the flat surface can just patch repair :).
engine is ok, worse case tukar engine.
prying not to get a lemon? what is the worst case scenario?
the absorber dun sound too expensive, if it can last say 2 to 3 years with
reasonable driving then it should be ok.
the rr is at a used car shop, the road from sungai buloh to batu 3 shah
alam, on the left side before a petrol station iinm, its closer to shah
alam though. have a good look and post back, might be interested.
i dun mind paying that kind of road tax once a year but how bad is the
engine? i read from your other post that yours overheat? hows the engine
transplant?
thanks

Greetings,

Babygod, thanks fer the info. Yes, I know about Harith's classic. Still up
fer grabs. Even saw it today (it's been almost 2 months since I 1st saw
it). An '89. What to do? These rigs cannot get financing. Hafta wait until
insurance (dunno when) and pray still got "rezeki"...

Koni shocks would set you fer about RM2000 per set. Mebbe can get less if
you know people cos Khidzir (Mobil) did mention it costs about RM800 (if
not mistaken) per pair. Performance shocks like Koni, OME would cost. One
UK website said that better fit Koni to rangies than bilstein (bilstein
smaller piston and rangie's a big and heavy car). Mebbe can ask Khidzir
fer opinion.

Btw, tuesday no can do fer TT as Mitchell would be back from Penang on
THursday. Would keep you guys posted on this. Moat, wanna join TT?
Proposed to be in Ampang point area.

Wa moat, you read every post eh? Yes, dunno what happened actualy to that
diesel. Heard that the VM engine not so reliable. Yes, got overheated and
probably by my own doing (isi air) got the cylinder head cracked. Hate the
thot of leaving that car in Kedah, so nursed it back to Klang Valley.

I thot that VM engine boleh tahan becos had similar exp with the petrol
3.5l. Overheated in Kuala Terengganu and hafta balik at all cost. Tried
many things and thot finally that sensor rosak. Balik lor with meter on
the red. After that several days short driving and finally the engine
almost seized up (felt very2 heavy). Finally, only head gasket (one head
only) bocor. The rest of the engine, OK - nothing wrong. You imagine,
running around 1 week on the red with the 1st day from KT to KL.

My mistake was to equate the 3.5l exp to the VM tdi.

My mistake was to decide on engine transplant. Got conned by one guy
(middle-man)who asked me to send that car to Ipoh (I know Ipoh is the
place as many cameron's LR got transplanted). That Indian was just a
middleman and finally after I got of that middleman's activity, I deal
directly with workshop. Time & money wasted. Now still going but frankly,
I kinda lost my enthusiasm. Better get another rangie, I guess. But the
consumption..wow! I did get about 600kms at about RM45-RM55 (2001 diesel
price). I'll post when I get to know sth concrete about this transplant
thing. In addition, the drive shaft or cv joint rosak I think. Making tak-
tak noise on the front left wheel.

Well, fer the petrol, the engine is robust as I mentioned earlier. But the
VM diesel, misti extra TLC. I guess getting a lemon would be a problematic
car with mechanical defects...like other car what? So far, didn't exp
major repairs. Btw, the classic steering is prone to leaking. That is one
annoying fact...sigh. So far my exp tukar parts fer classic (3 cars):
- starter RM 850 (special case) but can get RM900.
- absorbers: min RM440 per set.
- Bushings: got it fer RM650 per set from RM1300 listed price (polybush).
- steering damper: RM100
- aircond fan (1 unit): RM25
- mountings: RM25/pc (x 3)
- aircond compressor (recond - diesel car): RM 300+
- ignition module: RM 400+ (probably from land rover Malaysia - replaced
by workshop)
- ignition switch: RM300+ (prolly from LRM; so could get cheaper elsewhere)
- Clutch pump (diesel car): RM 300+ from Land Rover M'sia at 50% disc.
- repair on steering leakage (early days - dunno if the w-shop ketuk): a
few related jobs needed apart from changing parts: RM 1000+

The most important thing is that classic rangie could be repaired by many
exp mech. No computers save fer the ecu (EFI units). You dun really hafta
depend on Land Rover or specialised workshops. Do bear in mind that if you
compare LR with japs relaibility, you'd be disappointed. But if you add
other things such as comfort ride akin to a luxury car (fer a platry sum),
extraordinary off-road prowess... your call, in the end.

Even at the paltry sum, the classic still exudes a certain charm and
people would mistakenly think that you're a moneyed person...hehe.

Hey, I dun mind bb.

bb,
cant join your tt lah, i'm in shah alam, jauh n normally finish work late.
yup i read everything abt land rover in this forum already.
i think your diesel kaput because diesel is less tolerent with water
ingestion due to higher compression (how la to compress water?), whoaaa
but your petrol story is superb :).
what is "TLC"
your maintenance dun sound too bad, so i guess the major problem is if u
wreck the bodyshell due no spare part, can use series/defender bodyshell
on rangies chasis legally ah? (buy from scrapyard.)
my preference is still the defender 110, but if i still cant get it i
think i'll go for rangies diesel, so what r the weak point? defect that i
should look for? (like for defender its the chasis/bulkhead/etc.)
thanks much for all the info

Greetings,

Moat, TLC is "tender loving care".

Cannot lar. In UK bolehla but here tak boleh wor. How would it spell out
in the registration paper? Originally range rover but body defender/series.

Wait2...I do recall that on one regist paper (dunno which one - since I
had 3. Crashed 2 of them and one tersadai in work-shop) it is mentioned
land rover. Kalau berani can try ler. But then the wheel base different
ler between RR classic & series/defender.

But they did make out similar machines in the UK. Body defender & chassis,
suspension classic. Wow, garang & intimidating looks of the defender and
the superb ride (on & off-road) of the classic.

The guy Mitchell mentioned earlier in this forum did tell me that there
was one classic (stock + mud tyres) participating in a competition in the
UK. The rangie classic "slaughtered" other landies, some heavily modded.
So the defender looks + performance of RR classic - whaddaya get? The envy
of many LROM members I guess...hehe.

I didn't have much time with that diesel so I can't really tell you
comprehensively about the diesel RR. Less than a year, engine kaput.
Could've settled it with just the replacement of the cylinder heads (4
piston - 4 individual heads) but at that time, it cost about RM6000
(RM1500 x 4). So I opted fer an engine transplant. Bigger mistake!

Mebbe abused by previous owner, mebbe I didn't take enuff care...dunno. Oh
yeah, btw, did have a lost power once. These tow truck guys told me
compression kaput. But didn't wanna leave that car to those vultures. So
had it towed to my mech friend. Found out that a seal at the turbo unit
bocor and oil masuk into chamber, I think. Settled that, and the car back
to it's normal self. Cost of that seal is just RM100+. Imagine if the car
left to those vultures... I shudder at the thot of it.

Cheers

Anyway u guys just keep me posted when u want to have a TT.

VM diesel RR? Thats kinda rare in Malaysia eh. I heard parts would be
quite a headache.
Haha i guess every classic RR owners have one major problem with your
babies, the damn steering box. I cant recalled how many times it has been
replaced.
But if its possible i think a reasonable diesel engine transplant would
be a Toyota 1KZ V6 turbo diesel.
Sigh talking about diesel cant wait to test drive the Ford Ranger. Need a
truck with good fuel consumption and not one that guzzles petrol faster
than a fish drinking water.

Soooo sorryyy mates....
Firstly, today is my & my sons birthday.
Secondly, I just had a newborn on Sunday. It's a girl.
Many sellers replied my SMSes. I got people selling 4.0HSE for 85K (1996)
and another one selling 4.6HSE for 80K (1997) (Donno if it's the twin
exhaust type. All vehicles from KL.
I'm just sorting out the finance matters with am-finance. Donno can get
full loan or not. I wish I could so that I can stretch my cash for a
seven series BMW for my wife.
Babygod, what will I miss with 4.0 SE as compared to 4.6HSE? The 4.0SE is
more elegant. New Range Rover HEadlites, new air pump suspension & very
clean interior. Plus, the dark green & beige interior just make my
day....yippie. However the mileage is 168K KM.....arkh!!!! Maintained by
company for their CEO.
I hope everything will be okay, I will fly to KL end of this week or early
next week to view the car. Anybody wants to join the hunt? Teh tarik
later perhaps...most probably will stay in Mid-Valley Cititel.
Chiao guys.
p/s know any good Prado 3L Diesel TZ engine for sale?

Greetings,

Moat, how much would u give me fer a workable crashed rangie? Am
expecting the insurance to offer me in the region of 20K. I dun think
you'd give me that much ler...hehe.

If my somehow my RR diesel siap (dunno when and big if), would you be
interested? Engine not strong ler, pajero's 4D56-T. But kalu tinker, can
get more power like storm evo since same engine.

Babygod, am liaising with Mitchell. Will keep u posted. Y'know, one of the
thing I regretted about my recently crashe rangie is that no steering
leakage...even after almost a year! You wanna get the Ranger auto? I heard
the new ranger has better ride. Dunno of that includes the manual version.

Shamoo, happy b'day!. Wa, same b'day as son aa? My dotter missed me by 3
days. Congrats fer the baby gal. Waa, a new car to celebrate eh?

Yes, the 1997 would be the twin exhausts. Since I guess you gnna dismantle
the computer, it would be irrelevant which model 4.0 or 4.6, would it?
Mileage 168K. Fer the engine, tak kisahlar since you gonna dump it anyway,
rite? Eh, if you come to KL, can make it after the 12 aa? Neeway, can call
or SMS me at 012-313 7927 (Adlan).

Okeh, hafta go cheers
