yeah, the pre '97 models(carb.) is a bit problematic. Either mod. the
carb. or go for injection models. Other than that, not many issues I've
heard of so far.

I've been sending my landy to Norman at Breenway. Good mechanic, I like
him. He's the Lada specialist. When I asked him why Lada -- he said it's
got a central locking diff -- just like the landies. Incidentally, he's a
real off road kaki, serious stuff, with trophies littering the shop from
the past decade. That he chooses to drive a Lada Niva must tell you
something about the car, I think.
Try calling him again, maybe between 9am to 5pm. He's more likely to pick
up his phone. Or else try the shop number 03-5634 6000

Personally i think the Lada is suitable for our jungle in the sense its
light and has better ground clearance since it is running an independant
front suspension system. Anyway it is a permanent 4wd so it requires a
centre diff lock if u do go off roading. If not the simplest obstabcle u
encounter and the car becomes 1 wheel drive. Go figure.
This is coz our 4wd trails is basically mud and deeply rutted. Suspension
articulation doesnt seem to really matter these days except who runs the
most aggressive and biggest tyres on their rigs.

Every 4x4 system has got its own pros & cons. For me, nothing beats
permanent 4x4 in terms of traction & control over any surface. Unless of
course if one plans to use it for on-road as well, better go for part-time
system.
My plan is to get one strictly for off-road. Since I do not have budget
for a landy, have to settle for lada. Did thought of a defender at one
time, but I guess the lada has a bit more comfort factor. I've this
perception of going to war when I ride on a defender. But then again,
nothing beats it off-road.
