>>if alternator or battery not working, your diesel engine will not run
even if you manage to start the engine somehow

need batt to energize/de-energize? the fuel stop solenoid (this thing cut
fuel supply to the engine), on some diesel u can overide this.

Bingo... it's the fuel pump solenoid.

It's the click-click sound when turn the key to on.

Override? How? Any ideas ? Why is it there in the place ? Purpose?

When battery failed, my diesel vechicle is always at my carpark at home.
The glow plugs are drawing high current for heating(starting engine first
time in the early morning) before the engine is being cranked. By the time
the engine is cranked, the battery's reserve (at the end of service life)
is being depleted right after the glow plug heating. So no start !
Petrol engine need no heating. So less loading on the battery.

quoted from another forum
"take the solenoid controlled plunger (again Diesel only) out of the stop
valve and put it back together.

Your car will now start BUT it will not stop running when you turn the
ignition off so you have to stall it when you get home "

if u own a land rover i can try to locate the exact location for u, else
ask your mechanic.

As comparisopn between Diesel rig and Petrol equivalent , the demand for
power during starting and conntinous use is higher (Discovery 2)

Diesel , 2.5L Td5

Battery capacity = 110 AH
Alternator charging = 120 A
Starting motor power = 2 kW

Petrol , 4L V8

Battery capacity = 72 AH
Alternator charging = 130 A
Starting motor power = 1.8 kW

Shouldn't the diesel have the higher amp alternator instead?
