What GPS do you guys use?

Mines a Magellen 2000, purchased in early 96....not much good and very
slow.

My brother tells me the Garmin MAP76S is excellent. Coupled with an
external vehicle antennai this would be excellent. Bit pricy though!!!

slow to initialise...

Mine is another oldie. A Garmin GPS45XL. Handheld.

Still they do the essentials.

I used mine at the Kuala Lipis railroad crossing some years ago. After
checking the coordinates on the map we found the reading was out by some
600m to the SW. Years later we found a much better map datum to use. That
was about the last time I used mine. I much prefer a
map and compass myself. However, these latest gadgets are pretty damn
good. I really after something I can use practicaly anyway, especially
under the canopy and have a reading in a matter of seconds...not 60s+++
like my present one.

I have a hand-held, mapping Magellan Meridian Color that is less than 2
years old. No complaints except battery consumption so I use rechargeable
Ni-MH cells. In the car, it is powered from the cigarette lighter. I use
it for hiking, cycling and fishing (boating) as well as to record all my
trips abroad. Except in cities with narrow streets and tall buildings on
both sides, it is very sensitive and works great.

Booting up is just a couple of seconds and so is initialising except when
you shut off in a location quite far from where you are starting up and
there has been a lapse of time. I would input the coordinates of the new
location if I know it then it would also initialise in seconds. Of course
it all depends on how big a window you have to see the satellites and how
many can be seen through that window. The Magellan can log-on to up to 12
satellites. Without the WAAS satellites in USA, the maximum accuracy is 5
m (once in a blue moon 4m) but cannot achieve 3 m.

Vkool will kill all the signals so that is why I cannot use Vkool otherwise
I would need an external antenna. For the Magellan, I can only see an
advantage for an external antenna if there is a thick canopy of wet leaves
overhead.

I have actually asked in another thread if anybody knows of a source of
digitised maps of Malaysia and Singapore for the Magellan as I know there
are such maps available for Garmin. So you guys with mapping Garmins are
more fortunate.

Actually I much prefer Magellan, but considering Garmin purely because of
the digitisd mapping. However, its only a matter of time before Magellans
have it................Question is how much time?

Anyone can tell me where can I get the maps for Garmin? Thanks!!! I am
using the GPS V+ and it is a very fast unit. It is can very conveniently be
connected to an external antenna. Power consumption is quite incredible!! 4
AA NiMH batteries (2100mAH) can last for at least 20 hours.

I am looking for one model that comes with speech/voice directive. I
have tried one lately installed in a Merc (in UK) and it is fabulous as I
could just listen to the voice without having to flip thru those maps !

I suggest you look up the model on google, using the Malaysian option.
