Buying a 4x4

I've just sold off my old BMW and I am thinking of venturing into the 4x4
territory.
I have narrowed down my list to these three 4x4s which are within budget
1. Land Rover Defender
2. Ford Ranger
3. Mitsu Storm
I can't seem to get much info on the Defender. I heard that Land Rover
Malaysia does not sell the Defender to the consumer market. Is this true?
If so, is there any other way of getting a Defender, coz that is my first
choice.
Thanks in advance,

to get into the less comfy, dead slow and creaky world of 4x4...
if yuo insist so, I can share only about L R. The rest , I am not so sure.
quick fact:
1)LRM stop selling Def (90 and 110) many years ago.
2)Get Defender in the 2nd/3rd/nth hand market only. But beware because a
Defender is a desired item among LR users. there are the pickup and the
hard tops. Nither is not too easy to find and user not usually part with
it easily.Prepare to pay alilltel more for a good specimen.
Search the this board for Defender and you will find some good discussion
already discussed..

Makes me wonder how much is a LR Defender? You are talking about buying out
new or used units?
For help on Landrovers, kindly visit the New Discovery thread. There are
tremendous resources on the vehicle!
Incidentally, just that you might be interested. There's this LR Defender
90 in the Star classified since last week for RM23k plus I think. Perhaps
it's worth a look.
What else can I say. Defender is a good choice?? Hope to see you in the
off-road arena some time.

really kick ass 4x4!! So now I am going to get one.
Thanks for the info on the Defender. Wonder why LRM stopped selling them?
If thats the case, then I'll have to look towards the Ranger or the Storm.
Pity, coz getting a Defender would be totally awesome!

have called this guy. He said this is Ex Felda car and he claimed to have
never offroad this baby.....IF you could believe him.... ha ha.. (who
drive a Def 90 and NOT go to offroad belies any common sense..!)
He also claimed to plan to migrate and that is why he is letting go his
baby...
sounds too good to be true and could well be so.
tips : bring any good friends who have Xperience with LR preferably (beg
if necessary..)
in any case this could be good bargain. and yoo could well on your way to
have a real monster there. In any case , do not rush headlong into this so
fast..
p/s, LRM stopped selling because this model are perceived to be
utilitarian workhorse and they reckoned this model could tarnish/dilute
the upper model they are selling at that time , ie the Discoverys and the
Rangies...
what a load of bollock thinking...

before you decide which 4x4 to buy, you must ask yourself a few
question first. are you going to do hard core or just medium/light
offroading? do you intent to carry a lot of cargo or not? do you need on
road comfort as well? if you intent to do alot of hardcore offroading and
a lot of modification, LR defender is the best choice. front live axle
will perform better in hardcore track. if you travel on the road a lot,
and you just go for mild offroading once in a while, ranger or storm will
be a better choice. between ranger and storm, it spec are almost the same.
from my experience, sparepart for ranger is a bit expensive, although some
cheap taiwan part are available. set your priority first before you decide.

can know by a quick look underneath the undercarriege . its bodywork can
lie, its interior can lie, but its undercarriage can never lie. check for
sign of scrathes and damage around the axle area, especially around the
labu area. check your fuel tank guard plate for sign of scratches. some
4x4 model their transfer case are fitted with guard plate as well. again
check for scratches. engine bay is another area where you can check. how
well you clean the engine, there must be some place where you cannot clean
completely, especially some hard to reach area. check for sign of dry mud
around your gearbox area. remove the battery, you can easily see some dry
mud on the mounting plate. check area between radiator and aircond
conderser. if you look under the engine bay, you can easily spot the sign
of dry mud. so, happy inspecting........;)

apart. it is just too expensive to maintain now. later when my wallet is
thick enough, I'll start looking for a hilux. not the latest model hilux,
but the old one with front live axle. as your said looks cool and macho
which body lift. but most important, it will survive the worse nature can
throw .
