Hi

Noticed yesterday that my speedometer wasnt working. All other gauges were
ok: tach, fuel, temp etc.

When I restarted the car, it was ok again. This morning, the same thing
happened. It went dead for awhile and then came back on again.

Anyone experienced this before and know what the fix is?

Thnks

Petrolhead,

Is you meter cluster a VDO one?? The same thing happened to my A4 about 2
yrs ago... got bad news for you man: it means your speedo is almost dead.
Dont bother trying to repair it, i sent it to an eletronics engineer, even
he couldn't repair it bcoz audi uses surface-mounted parts (tiny, chip like
thingys). The solution, look for a potong kereta one... prices ranges from
rm600 to a whopping 1k depending on your luck and negotiation skills. Try
to get the UK-NSI cluster (exactly the same but different manufacturer),
forumers say this one is much better and long lasting.

petrolhead,
b4 u go and change the instrument cluster,go check the Vehicle speed
sensor (VSS).The VSS should have a set of connectors(3 or more) jutting
out and connected to a set of loomed wires located near the gearbox or
behind it (for cars with speedo cable, this is where the cable starts and
ends behind your speedometer).

My pug 406 used to have that problem i.e kadang2 ok kdg2 tak ok but mine
is Sagem made in france.I think it would be almost the same system.VDO is
also using the VSS for speedo reading.Try changing that sensor.Ask spare
parts shop for quotations for your brand.

hope that helps.

hi there...i am pretty sure it is not as bad as it sounds. i had the same
problem. that meter kadang2 works and then it does not. all other meters
are ok. it is a RM90 job and if u get it at See Soon it is about RM75-80
for the sensor. got mine changed and it is perfectly fine. it is a quite
and easy job to change too...i got mine done in Audible. RM90 is their
price. but actually can push a little more..ask for RM80
cheers

Hi Everyone

Thanks for all your feedback. Will have it checked out when I get my car
serviced at Ever this coming weekend.

As far as I know there were no error codes for the speed sensor the last
time I had my car in the workshop just before Raya. I had the diagnostic
tool on to reset the ABS sensor I replaced.

Tgsiva, is the RM90 for the speed sensor? Hopefully this is the cause of
my speedo problem.

At least now I know the best and worst case scenarios.

Cheers.

How'd it go from 1G to RM80.

This forum is helping VW/Audi owners save.

jake. u didt reply. A VW owner told me there's a mechanic in Klang that
does VW. He does not have the diagnostic equipments. The club was thinking
about engaging other mechanics to familiarize with our cars.... worth it?

petrolhead,
i don't think the faulty VSS will record anything on the ECU unless u
have a trip/fuel computer which will show a very bad FC or unusually high
FC.

the cheapest solution still is to check the connections from the sensor
to thw speedo is intact ie no loose connections.it will be free u know!

Hi twinpipes,

There are certain things we cannot do until we are fully registered with
ROC. Currently they are still processing our application across the Raya
holidays which slow things down a bit.

In essence we would like to maintain a good relationship with all
mechanics and suppliers as each have their own specialty in certain
repairs/parts. Our goal is to try to work with them without jeopardising
member’s access to decent customer service & value.

Currently we have do not have any policy in that aspect (assisting a
mechanic setup) as this may be sensitive to other established mechanics.
Doing so may entail further problems and commitment that as a voluntary
club with limited resources would be difficult to service, from training
commitments to fallout and negative publicity which may affect you as a
member.

Trust that the committee will look into the matter soon. Ideas include a
mechanic customer satisfaction rating feedback from members themselves,
with the club can facilitating all parties in creating a better value all
round.
