In the 90's, most of the car owners drive conventional sedan, SUV, MPV, K-
cars were less seen on the road, and perhaps have not existed. Civic,
Sentra, Corolla were among the favourite non-local sedan, for those who
can afford to pay higher price for a new car (from RM60k in the early
90s, till RM80k++ in the late 90s) Although these models have good resell
value, but most of the Rakyat, opt for a more afforadable and economical
(i.e cost cheaper) car- Saga (including iswara) from RM36k; or the best-
seller- Wira starting at RM45k (1.5). Saving them (us) at least RM20,000;
and that time, down payment amount and interest rate were higher.
Thus, you see many Wiras on the road, bearing different number plates and
body color. The reputation of Koreans were not strong yet. Well, although
the quality and technology were not as advanced as Japanese-made, but
given the price (ya, it's protectionism-effect), it makes Wira the best-
selling sedan. Sooner, the car became more expensive and undergo various
face-lifts, but the demand for it did not drop, especially after the
launch of 1.3 models.
Interest-rate drop after the Asian-crisis, owning a car was easier, but
due to the economy, less people go for more expensive car, hence Wira's
still the best-seller. At this time, korean made started to penetrate the
local market, with Kia Sephia being launched at RM5xk, direct compete
with Wira. The perception for Korean-made was still not that positive due
to its new entry to the market- Wira still a winner.
The car industry in the new millenium is much more exciting with many
mergers and aquisition among global car company making the business more
competitive. New models and categories are aggressively introduced to the
market, for instance SUV, MPV and the once finding it hard to accepted K-
car (eg: Kenari)
Economy was recovered, lifestyle has changed, so do the demand and
preferences. During this time, Waja was introduced, proving M'sian are
now arrived at another Milestone. Feeling excited to own a "conti-feel"
local sedan (as postitioned by Proton) at lower price (compare to foreign
made), many people placed their bookings. Only till many realized that
Proton was (is?) not really ready for a real-DECENT car. Quality problems
still persisted. The Rakyat were (are) then disappointed, after some 15
years, they still can't get a quality car at competitive price. Well,
many who are now doing well will like to own a foreign-brand, for various
reasons.
The powerful "word-of-mouth" soon shows its impact. Potential buyers
found themselves hanging around other companies' showroom, checking the
KIA SPECTRA, Honda City, Toyota Vios etc, and some prefer buying used or
recond-made. As for newer generation, Perodua are the prefered choice,
RM40k to RM46k for a 1.0 kelisa or kenari, simply not a cheap price to
pay, but the demand for low-running cost, small and compact; as well as
multi-purpose car (kenari) are increasing. Jazz, March, Getz, Aveo,
Picanto are the lifestyle cars that many would like to own. Although Gen2
was launched later, but the negative impression on Proton products,
resulted many car-lovers to commit themselves with other brand. The
introduction and impact of Avanza shows how desperate and excited the
Rakyat (majority) is to own a "affordable" and "spacious" car, rather
than "sporty" or "good handling"; moreover from a reowned and reliable
brand.
Proton felt the heat, especially after Perodua launched the new Myvi,
which is the product of collaboration between Perodua and its JV partner,
Daihatsu. Myvi's positioning as "sylish", "affordable", "powerful",
and "spacious" car, succeed in grabbing 21,000 orders in just 15 days.
Proton then launched an ads stating "wow! luckily my son didn't book THE
OTHER CAR", to give hopes to potential buyers.
The new car is launched, positioned as "sporty", "tough", "good-
handling", "has top speed of 170km/h" and even called "my first lotus" by
the ceo. Well, do the majority R3 àÛ1 In the 90's, most of the car owners drive conventional sedan, SUV, MPV, K-

one more worth to mention... nowadays the traffic is really killing. Sawi
is launch without Auto.
So, that's clear a NO for me... , don't even bother when they want to
launch. so slow, how to compete with perodua

am currently driving mother's 8 yr old wira.
it was totalled in its 2nd year when a kapchai flew perpendicularly into
the engine bay. mother and sister were shocked but safe.
am thinking of getting a suzuki swift now since reviews of it abroad have
been consistently generous with praises.
still, am giving credit to the wira workhorse simply bcos it did its job.
(or maybe mother's wira was supposed to be destined for VIPs hence got
good QA)

wira is actually a copy from the mitsu lancer the second generation... at
that time, 1992 i think, that lancer was the best selling car in japan
with its appearance of evo 2 too... it is amazing how potong and the gov
have screwed our auto industry for 20 years... if they happen to be like
kia/hyundai... me will behave like the koreans, but the prob is no, they
became worst. Now in this competitive world, nobody will care if potong
improve ah, they achieve something ah, they made their own car all by
themselves ah, nobody cares... nobody buy ur products means nobody buy,
no matter how u have improved. simple logic that some minority ppl don't
understand...
