Hey Edison, I mean high sulphur diesel will short life de catalytic
converter (previously I say damage maybe is a mistake word). Just quote
from below:

Various modifications to diesel fuel can reduce diesel exhaust emissions.
Reducing sulfur content of diesel fuel decreases sulfur oxides emissions
and thus sulfate particulate emissions. It also positively affects the
performance and durability of catalytic aftertreatment devices. Low sulfur
fuels and special catalyst formulations are required to limit the
catalytic generation of sulfate particulates from sulfur dioxide present
in the exhaust gas.

You can't really learn from chemistry.

okay bright boy. You are half right. The article you are quoting deals
with commercial considerations made by manufacturers of catalytic
converters to comply with minimum government standards. In developed
countries, or countries where Governments really do care about whether or
not your kids get lung cancer or brain damage from traffic pollutants,
manufacturers and fuel producers have to comply with certain standards on
emission control. That is not the emmissions from the end of your DICK but
from your car exhaust pipe. Cat cons use very expensive metals in
manufacturing, so the manuf. don`t wanna put in more than is neccessary to
comply with gov. regs. WHY therefore are YOU concerned with this issue
when the Gov. here don`t give a flying toss about emission control?????
And the first thing most RAZZO or RALLY ART tuned morons in this country
do is rip out their OME exhaust and shove in a 12" pipe? So, back to the
modern diesel engine in Malaysia, as I said before a lot of bollocks is
written on this forum about Malaysia`s crappy diesel damaging the Euro 3
engines etc., dirt in da fuel etc etc.....I just repeat again BOLLOCKS, if
any "damage" does happen, you wouldn`t even notice it! The very worse that
can happen is your "catalytic converter" is pollutinmg the atmosphere more
than it should. Now you tell me, are YOU going to notice that?

thanks for the info guys.

looks like the E270CDI might not be a bad choice, really. even full spec
is much cheaper than the E240 (which has already been discontinued in all
other markets besides Malaysia... as usual....), better torque, and
drinks diesel.

hehe, shall look forward to the pump attendant's face when my friend
pulls up at Petronas and ask for Diesel instead of Super :p

Ermm, Edison and Einstein. Here is a small prawn comment, high sulphur
will not damage the cat con, but reduce its effectiveness to convert
toxic gasses(CO, NOx) into non-toxis gasses. High sulphur content will
condense on the cat converter and cover up the reactive surface. The cat
converter can actually "rejuvent" by running the engine red hot so the
hot gasses will burn off the elemental sulphur trapped inside the cat
con. I think there is some system that inject a small amount of fuel in
to burn off the sulphur, not too sure thou.

A diesel engine do not have throttle, so they cannot accelerate like
petrol car, the only way to have more power is to inject more fuel
directly into the combustion chamber, and therefore create bigger
combustion aka more powerful. But we still hv the same amount inside the
cylinders, and thus we have higher % of unburnt fuel as soot in the form
of black smoke. Newer diesel car cat con can trap these soot and thur
reduce smoke. But after a period the sulfur will lower the car con
effectiveness.

My 2cents, please enlighten me with more complete knowledge.

Hi Ruykava,

This is might be off topic but you might need to reconsider again on the
E270CDI.

Not because of the diesel engine but the cars it self. My dad's using it
and there's a same problem which always occur repetitively. I forgot what
it is but it has something to do with the computer system (if i'm not
wrong). And the problem was always when using the cruise control. at one
point in the middel of the highway (while turning the cruise on), the car
will slow down automatically and for a while you cannot accelerate it
back.
This has been repaired and it occurs 2-3 times again after 2-3 times
repaired!

My father got 2 friends using the same 270CDI, and they all facing the
same problem.

I heard rumours saying that this is happening because we dont have
specialised malaysian MERC mechanics to solve this problem. I dont know
wether this is true or not.

maybe few studies before purchasing the 270CDI can helps.

Btw, the diesel engine is great. Value for money when travelling..saves a
lot!

hmm, thanks for that heads up sobiet. so far i haven't heard of any
problems regarding cruise control. do you think it could be because your
dad has turned on the limiter instead (it uses the same stalk as the
cruise control - activated by pushing in and it stays activated even
after you off the car) - that would certainly explain why it suddenly
slows down.

you might want to post this issue on the Merc forum here - perhaps some
members can help if you can get down the exact nature of the problem and
how and when it occurs =)

btw, got the 270CDI in the end and he hasn't been experiencing any
problems so far ;) but he never uses the cruise control, so.. :D

ruykava,
When our diesel reach Ero 5 quality, at same cost or lower. Than we can
talk about diesel cars. That will be very nice as no black smoke.Approve and
all the pros.Smile

It's not only malaysia with diesel not meeting the specs. I was
corresponding to someone in the US recently. He's complaining the latest
diesel Volvo are not marketed there (including other new diesel models from
Euro cars). The diesel in US would ruin the fuel injection system in these
Euro Diesel models.
