From The Star today, 1st Feb:

---------------------------------

TOKYO: Toyota Motor will invest US$485mil to build a third factory in
Thailand to meet demand for its multi-purpose IMV vehicles for the global
market, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun said yesterday .

Toyota, now selecting the factory site near Bangkok to start construction
work by the end of the year, planned to spend some 50 billion yen
(US$485mil) on the plant to produce 200,000 vehicles a year under the
Innovative International Multi-purpose Vehicles or IMV project, the
economic daily said.

The new plant would produce mostly pick-ups, it said.

Toyota launched the IMV project last year to make a total of five low-cost
models of pick-up trucks, minivans and sport utility vehicles in Asia,
South Africa, Argentina and other areas by using common chassis. – AFP

More jobs lost, more foreign exchange lost. The world is a free market,
as long as we like being jaguh kampong because of protectionism, then we
can stay like a katak dibawah tempurong.
This is not just true for Toyota, all the other big multinational
companies are pulling out of Bolihland and taking their money up north.
Sawadee..kap!

To continue to spoonfeed and protect the weak, Malaysia is slowly going
downhill.. soon they won't even have enough money to spoonfeed the weak,
and we have to go Thailand and China to work...

Government need to promote Tanjong Malim auto centre to the world. I
believe with the right strategy, may stillpossible to lure other maker to
be there. Can work hard like they did with electronics industry back in 70-
90's promotion dulu.

Give clear benefits, industry direction, etc... Country
automotive "agenda" need to be out now, can't wait until middle of the
year larrr.

At least Malaysia can boast the luxury of an enormous car manufacturing
plant constructed at massive public expenditure to simply stand idle. A
bit like a rich guy having a yacht moored in a marina but never using it.
Who else can do that?

Malaysia's f*cked in terms of car manufacturing, it will never catch up
but stupid pride being what it is here, no one in charge will admit it
was all a mistake.

The govt is clearly aware of the steps needed to build a regional
automotive base. Unfortunately, it is most unwilling to scrap the
national car project for the sake of false pride stemming from that
idiotic rally cry "Malaysia Boleh".

very sad to hear this news. where is our trade minister? why she failed
to bring in this investment to malaysia? definitely not because thailand
has cheap labour. last year renault invested USD500m in korea to produce
engine, we are cheaper that korea why renault didn't chose malaysia?

Why she failed?...because she is trying to korek as much $ by giving as
much APs to her relatives...

Why don't choose M'sia?...because the rest of countries are ganging up on
M'sia because of our protection on Proton and gang...risk is high
