Suzuki CKD programme to come onstream 1Q07

DRB-Hicom Bhd's unit Suzuki Malaysia Automobile Sdn Bhd expects its
completely knocked-down (CKD) programme for Suzuki Swift to come onstream
in the first quarter (1Q) next year, said a company official, who
declined to be identified.
“We have not finalised on the number of production under the programme.
We will also introduce two to three more models next year,” she told
reporters after a Suzuki Malaysia event in Kuala Lumpur on Oct 13.
She said among the new models to be launched next year included its
Sports Suzuki Swift and Vitara four-by-two.
The company official said Suzuki was hopeful of meeting its 250-unit
monthly sales target for the current year aided by its zero interest and
“We started (selling) only in May last year, and by year-end (of 2005) we
sold almost 2,000 units,” she added.
On a separate matter, the company official said there had
been "indications" from both Suzuki Motor Corporation and Suzuki Malaysia
for the former to assume a certain stake in the latter.
“Nothing has been confirmed yet. Both parties have agreed since the day
we started the negotiations, they (Suzuki Motor Corp) will have a stake
in Suzuki Malaysia," she said.
FinancialDaily reported in September that Suzuki Motor Corp may soon
assume control of the Suzuki franchise in Malaysia from DRB-Hicom as the
Japanese carmaker seeks to exert a greater influence on the marketing and
strategic direction of the business.
Sources had said Suzuki Motor would want at least a 51% controlling stake
in Suzuki Malaysia.
The Suzuki Malaysia company official said if the acquisition by Suzuki
Motor Corp were to materialise, the company would be able to leverage on
the Japanese carmaker’s expertise and technology.
“It would bring the brand to another level. It would be more interesting
as we will be transferring technology to Malaysia and with the CKD
programme in line, we know that we will come up with interesting products
in future,” she added.
