Smart (small) cars may not be relevant now, but environmental issues and
depleting oil reserves will force the world to rethink the automobile.
In that I think Smart, as a brand, has the foresight and that they will
slowly but surely find relevance in the market maybe not today but 5-10
years from now.
If smart cars shold fail, it's a drop in the ocean for Daimler Chrysler,
but should smart suceed, it may be their golden goose.

buying a RM90K state of the art joy ride. Probably a drop in the ocean
for the priviledged ones. I was at the Merc dealer today and the manager
told me that a few buyers of the Smart just bought with cash without a
blink of an eye. Went to the bank, got the cashier's check and wallah!
just like buying KFC...no need to think, count, check account, ask
anybody for loan/opinion. Just because they fancy it.
I suppose if a 1st Class London ticket costs RM18K, it just 4 trips to UK
and that the price of the car! If you look at it that way...Smart is a
good deal...hahahaha!

for a fully imported small premium car. think about the competition.
Mitsubishi Colt - around the same price
Honda Jazz - RM100k - 109k
Nissan March - RM96 - 117k
and Smart For4 - RM96 - 101k
currently my family has a March and yes, it costs much more than an Aveo
or Getz but i like it - the design and features are well worth it -
Keyless engine start, 8 airbags, powered liftgate, funky dashboard,
electronic climate control etc etc. it is the same logic for the Smart.
in fact, am considering getting one for my parents to drive. and if you
think about it that way, then the A170 - which does pretty much the same
things as a For4, costs RM170k! and the BMW 1-series costs even more (i
think). yet both are quite popular as well.
the fact is car prices in Malaysia are crazy - and if you see a cheap car
it's most likely due to AP lol.
hehe, btw, if you bought a BMW for the safety, i'm afraid you made the
wrong choice - didn't they receive only 3 stars in Euro NCAP (previous 3-
series) and 4-stars for the new 5-series? in a day and age where any
premium manufacturer easily scores 5-stars, that's a little worrying to
me. anyway, i don't think it's a big problem - peace ;)
safety doesn't have very much to do with how solid a car looks or feels -
a bit of damping here and there can make a car FEEL very stable. in fact
the Smart is one of the safest cars you can crash in. the metal frame is
like a rollover cage - as long as your seatbelts are on, the cabin is
almost impossible to penetrate. and the engine drops below the car in a
crash, instead of coming straight at you - a common cause of death in
budget brand car crashes.
