I'm currently running a QD car - a cheapo bash car while I work on my
noobie driving skill. It's one of those made-in-china ones, an *exact*
knock-off of Tamiya's QD for less than one sixth of the price.. hehe..
Now I'm thinking about the next step up. Maybe a proper electric or even a
nitro perhaps, again just for bashing around and to learn on. I definitely
don't need an out-and-out race-spec track killer that cost as much as a
kapcai motorcycle.
A few weeks ago I paid Toycity a visit. Those CEN RTR really caught my eye
lah. The 4WD electric goes for RM1050 with every damn thing included
(however I will have to fork out a few hundred more for extra batt
sticks). But the nitro one... wah, it's just RM100 more all in.. chassis,
controller + servos, engine, glow starter, plus 2 litres of
nitromethane... wow!!
The Toycity folks tell me CEN parts are plentiful and cheaper than most
brands. That's always good to hear.
Can anyone comment on this?

CEn cars are entry level "proper" rc cars, which is exactly what you are
after. However, getting them from Toycity is a mistake, cos Toycity
artificially inflates the prices so high that it makes CEN cars look
overpriced. That is one of the reasons why those who race using "pro" kits
look down on CEN, after all the price you pay for a CEN is almost enough
to get you a semi/pro car.
If you are in KL, why not check out some of the rc car shops? Like RACE in
Ampang Park, even RC pitstop in 1 Utama, Subang, etc. Lots of places, if
you visit the following website you can find out more.........

And go to the Malaysian R/C racers section

I visited another Toycity... and it got even better. The fella said
RM1,000 on the dot for the CEN TR-4 RTR kit, with fuel etc all in!
Having seen the rather intimidating prices at that RC shop in Ampang Park,
I don't see why people say Toycity prices are inflated.
Am I missing something?

Yes, you are missing something. Tell the madam that you are after an entry
level RTR and you'll soon find that your prices are cheaper. I assume the
prices you've seen are for the "pro" kits and their hop up options?
On the otherhand, you can always buy a second hand car to start with and
see if you like the hobby enough to invest more, cos if you get hooked,
your RTR which seems so high powered to you now will soon seem
inadequate.........

Hmm... second hand cars sound like a good idea. Where do I look for one?
And what's a fair price for a used kit?
In the previous thread, got people advising against second hand cars cos
they're knackered. You may end up having to buy replacement parts like
servos or engine, which could end up making buying used more expensive
than buying a brand new entry level RTR kit.

forget about CEN...I have one..big mistake of having it...now only left
with part here and there....already switch to kyosho. CEN not good in
terms of its handling crap... parts always loose...like the front and
rear wheel arm...it you get the pro one also I will not advise it. Better
off buying another reputable brand.

i was into RC years back. played at SS19 and knew few people including
who's who in RC. if you ask me, no i will not invest on CEN. get others
(kyosho,yokomo...etc) or if budget constraint get a used one.
if u worry about yr budget why not start with electrics. 1k can get u a
good electric chassis. but point to note electrics will get costly in long
run.
