Hi guys,
I need advice. I was driving to work this morning (Proton Wira, 5 yrs,
Manual) when something I never encountered before happened.
I started off normally, but had to come to a stop at a junction. After I
had put the freed the gear (Neutral), and not press the clutch pedal nor
the fuel pedal, I realized the car was still in a state as though the fuel
was still pressed down but in Neutral gear. Thus, making a lot of noise
(As though I'm about to start a race) whenever I had to stop at traffic
lights and of course the traffic jam.
However, it sort of disappeared a bit after driving a bit longer. So I'm
not sure if this is serious, and whether it will haunt me again when I
least expect it. (This time, I managed to reach the office).
Any advice? Thanks.

Hi Revgen2002,
I guessed yours in 1.5 manual or auto ? Ummm..your problem sound your fuel
line might be jammed. Or you need retuning on your ECU.

Hi g88,
Thanks for the reply. Mine's only a 1.3 Manual. I'm not very good with
cars, so please bear with me.
Are the 2 problems you described above serious? How much is it gonna burn
my wallet, if it is as you said?
Thanks man.

If its a fuel injected version, could be the engine ECU throwing a
tantrum. Proton ECU's arent the best thing around, and are known to be
quite erratic with their behaviour. Have your PESB service centre have a
look at it - if it was the ECU, they can plug in the diagnostic kit and
find if there are any error codes in the ECU that suggests an electronic
malfunction of sorts.
Alternatively, it could be a sticking throttle cable, something that may
affect both fuel-injected and carb-fed versions, since the throttle
butterfly on both are cable operated. When this cable sticks or gets
jammed within its protective rubber casing, the throttle butterfly stays
open, revving the engine as you experienced it even when the accelerator
pedal has been released. Have this cable checked, and while you're at it,
have the mechanic squirt in some WD-40 to make sure the cable doesnt get
stuck again...

if you stop pedalling but your car still pedaling of course it's danger to
yourself and others. Imagine this, you are speeding at 80km/h and suddenly
you need to slow down...but the car won't and you need to free the gear
(sure the engine will rev like hell(sorry about this) by itself...
So...wallet also burning.

Thanks, you guys are really a helpful bunch!
I think I'll get a mechanic to take a look at it, to make sure what the
problem is.
Hopefully it's not too serious...
What am I possibly looking at - From "Less than $100" for not so serious
problem to ...??

Having a mechanic remove the cable, check it & squirt some WD-40 into it
should cost a teh tarik or two if you're real friendly with the man - ha
ha.
Replacing the cable costs a bit more, but shouldnt set you back more than
RM50, really. I had my throttle cable on my Saga (which basically uses
the same 4G15 engine as the Wira, so parts should cost about the same) a
few years back and it was only about RM45.
If its the ECU, however..hmm...that's gonna cost a few thousand bucks,
easily, if you get a brand new one direct from the Proton Edar boys.
