hi phibes, darn good info!

what's ur take on the redline ATF products? are they full-synth?

am currently on Redline Racing ATF for my alfa 156 with aisin automatic
gearbox. since ive started using it, ive noticed shifts were quicker with
more "positive" lockups. almost like a clutch drop on a manual. i hope it
doesnt shock the drivetrain. i change out every 10k kms (excessive, i
know. call me paranoid!) cos i drive high speeds for extended durations
and i track the car.

redd, i believe the Redline is fully syn. They work best in electronic
tranny like your Aisin.

the positive lockups u mentioned...i also experienced the same thing with
the normal Esso D2 oil..really hope it doesnt break anything.

Talking about high speed, i just did that today, thrashed it really badly
and now my ATF cooler is leaking and the hoses are showing signs of
wear...time to change to braided screw on hoses.

fkmfkm,

The Q8 feels better.. in terms of shift smoothness and predicability..
there is no more torque converter slap like I used to experience with the
Original factory fill ATF.. as well there is less Coasting drag .. as far
as it being bettter technically on paper.. compared to the LT71141.. it's
probably not "better".. as the LT71141 is fully Synth.. however this
attributes mostly towards longer drain interval .. which dosn't apply to
me as I change it about every 20k kms anyway.

Redd,

dude.. your using the wrong ATF in your gearbox and you are killing it..
these positive lockups you are experiencing will result in a permanent
lockup of the clutch packs one day if you don't get back to spec for your
Aisin 6 speed. Redline has 4 types of ATF, All Sythetic.. the 2 most
common are D4 and High Temp.. the racing stuff you are using is based on
the Ford Type F spec which has no friction modifiers. Look for a way to
increase the shift line pressure in your Valve body to increase the speed
of the shift without messing with the ATF for the same effect. It will
make no difference if you use only Vigin ATF in your gearbox in this
case, it will still fail prematurely using the Fluid your going with
(IMHO).

Some fluids that are closer to spec for your Elctronic Lock-up slip
controlled gearbox are;

Ford XT-8QAW
Volvo 1161540
Toyota T-1V
Mobil JWS 3309
GM 9986195

The only Redline ATF that is closer to spec is actually ATF D4 .. but
it's not what the doctor ordered. Compare the info on your current
selection against the product sheet for Mobil JWS 3309 and you see to
completely different pictures.

I will do some more digging and get you some more choices, can you give
me the part number of your Automatic Gearbox or the specific Model number
as referenced by Alfa?

Q8 has 4 flavors of ATF, 1 is a DexronIID type, one is a Ford Mercon Type
and the two other are DexronIII types.. they are Auto 15 and Auto 15ED,
we carry both the DexronIII types.

Hey Phibes,

If the wrong type of ATF is used in a transmission, what are the signs?

For example, if Dexron III is specified, but another type (non-
compatible) is used, the transmission will NOT shift, right? That`s the
usual sign/effect.

However, could the trans. still function with the wrong type of ATF, ie.
still shift but, with less power and more slippage & jerky?

Signs of wrong ATF is either shift slipping or delayed shifting which
feels like it is slow to move into gear though you are at or above the
Automatic shift point and it is still spooling up, or harsh shifting
and/or torque converter slap, like Ka-KluNk.
