SGTi OWNERS;
Thinking of getting the GTi for my daughter - in college, and just passed
driving test. Want a manual so that she is familiar with the tranny, and
also someting that I can use occasionally.
Need honest and frank feedback on the CAR by the OWNERS; especially on the
problems and quirks that you have faced during ownership of the car.
Would appreciate if you could state the year model and current mileage,
bought new or 2nd hand, so that I could fairly assessed the ownership
value.
Is there one in pipeline on the replacement? If so, when?
Thanks in advance for all feedbacks.

Do not buy a SGTi for your daughter, BIG mistake. People who just got
their driving license should drive something slower and when they have
enough experience, then only switch to more powerful cars.

beemer328,
Have you talked the matter over with your daughter? Have you DECIDED (MEANS 100% CERTAIN) of getting a GTi for her?
Why you thinking of GTi? Are you sure getting a powerful car for someone just out of driving is wise? However, if you have gone through all those questions and still think of getting GTi, here's my opinion.
I'm no owner, but I do have something to say. I assume you are looking for 2nd hand since you are asking ppl for the market value of their GTi. Check the newspapers, note the year and prices of all the GTis advertised and calculate the average value for each year.
Do beware if you are buying a used GTi. I once read an article that says no person in his right frame of mind would part ways with a machine like the GTi. If he does, there could be something wrong with the car. I don't know how true is that.
Try to get the earlier GTis. More recent GTis, not sure since when, have a speed cut off at abt 190kph(correct me if I'm wrong). A PE salesman once told me, if you get a more recent GTi, get rid of the cut off. He claims the car, w/o the cut-off can hit 245kph (he CLAIMS). I also heard that more recent GTis use the problematic Siemens ECU that is the source of headache of thousands of 2002 onwards Wira/Satria owners. If I'm not mistaken, the older GTis use Mitsu ECU. Lastly, the newer GTis are also slightly de-tuned, compared to the older ones.
Happy shopping.

Beemer 328, i am just gonna end my P license in one months time. It's not
wise to get a GTi for your daughter as its way too powerful for a
beginner. Look, if you could afford it and you want it, by all means go
ahead, but for starters, why not get something not too
powerful...something 1.6 and below..and yeah, if you're in KL, it's not
advisable to go for a manual tranny as the jams will get you up to your
nerves and i'm thankful that i'm driving an auto. Secondly, like the
gunner said, earlier protons are much better and yeah i am also hunting
for a second hand GTi but it's hard to get a good one coz no one would
wanna sell something that they bought for 6x k or 7xk now and part with it
if there's nothing wrong with the car. If owners of the GTi didn't buy it
for their power, what else would they buy it for? I mean come on...i am
not marring the GTi down but if u noticed, as long as u see one on the
road, usually it's being driven fast. Especially for your daughter, if you
like, why not consider some other makes besides Proton? Would save you a
lot of headache. Just my opinion. Good luck.

mr. bemmer,
i'm not a GTI owner but one of the GTI fans, too...
actually anyone can drive a GTI,young or old, doesn't matter! don't let
the bodykit or 1.8 DOHC engine fools you, it all depend on the owner or
driver itself who control the car... well, if i was you... i'll choose a
new CITY, VIOS or KELISA for her! i think your daughter should looks good
on that... a GTI also not bad actually! :)

The Satria GTi is just a normal hatch, just like any 1.8s.Just relax and
get one for your daughter. The power issue is being exaggerated.

S Gti also comes with Airbag and ABS - that's a safety plus point here.
Power - means nothing if you do not use it wisely.
You can see (for example) Kancil drivers going very fast (to quote the
Works Minister)...
The fact that its a better handling car than the likes of the City and
Vios (flamesuit "ON") means that - you would be able to control the car
better and react to drive out of danger faster.
To me the SGti a driver's car. If I were you - I'll get the GTI over a 1.3
or 1.5 Satria.

Isk, no offence, but from it seems that the ABS thingy keeps on failing
on the Wira 1.8, i heard from some friends to that the same thing happens
for the SGti, perhaps, that wouldn`t be too much of a assurance that it
would be a safer car..whatever it is...though the 1.8 isn`t a all too
powerful unit to you all, don`t forget what material the chassis of the
satria is made of...that`s what makes it `too powerful`..

Guys and all;
Thanks for your feedback and kind thoughts especially on the welfare of my
daughter.
Acyually she learn driving using my bimmer and the problem is - I do not
trust driving school curriculum - to educate and develop ability to handle
manual tranny driving style. 8-16 hrs of lesson and thats it: pass driving
test. (I am a graduate from British School of Motoring (BSM), Cardiff,
1982; and thus I think I am pretty qualified to make that statement, just
in case some forumer question. I can compare the emphasis from British
Depertment of Transport curriculum with that of ours).
So, in order for her to get acustommed to manual tranny, I have decided
on a reasonably good car (could be 2nd hand conti, but a manual for sure -
even then the choice is pretty limited nowadays).
BTW, my daughter watch spiderman too: With great power comes great
responsibility.
I would like to know the actual problem that the OWNERS faces on their
ride, not opinions please, if U don`t mind.
Thanks.
P/s IF, and that a big IF, you see a GTi with "P" sticker on the road,
chances are it would be my daughter. Have not seen GTi with the "P"
stickers on yet.
