Hi, I've been thinking of doing an engine conversion by dropping in a GSR
4G93T into my GTi.

Is GSR engine a good reliable engine? How much power can a stock 4G93T GSR
make? Is the maintenance easier if compared to VR4 or Evo engines?

I read an article about this guy rebuilding his GSR to produce 434HP. Check
out this link: http://www.ignitionm...e.co.nz/cars/44

lately, the prices of gsr 1/2cuts have gone through the roof. 6k+ for an
engine that old is just not justifiable. better spending that money on
upgrading the current engine. can get about 180hp at the wheels, no
hassle with jpj.

yup, agree.

tot of converting my oldie wira but the price doesn't justify it. just 6k+
for the 1/2 cut. change this and that comes close to 10k.

simply not worth it.

hi pc,

i've just dumped this into my 1.6 wira, an advise for u, u can always buy
a cheaper 93T auto version, and reuse ur old gti gearbox, possibly add
some budget for new clutch and flywheel etc...

cost i did is only RM 7.5k not even near 10.....in future change 2.5 inch
normal steel piping mayb add few more hundreds, temporary put away some
luxuries/preference to have boost meter, oil catch tank, timer and other
turbo accessories.....

me now on my way to endorse this engine with jpj, awaiting their reply
still..... Frown

if u plan not to go boosting all over the place, then i think the gti
gearbox will hold. but if u plan to modd further, best of luck:-P

6K for a 4G93 turbo halfcut is not too bad lah. 5 years ago, they were
about 5K. And whether it too old... that depends. It's about 10 years
younger than VR4s and people were still snapping VR4s up not so long ago.

And if all you want is plug and play (drop in the engine and don't want to
do anything else except oil change), then transplants are not for you.
There is no such thing as a plug and play transplant, no matter how new the
engine is supposed to be.

I assume you want reliability as well as performance. My advise is to pay
the 6K for the halfcut, use everything from it and set aside at least 5K to
fix / overhaul / repair / replace. Whether you do all that when you drop in
the engine (which I advice wholeheartedly) or do a bits & pieces, here &
there for the next 3 years is up to you. But rest assured, you will spend
at least that amount, if not more. But personally, I like to drive my turbo
car, not jack it up in a workshop all the time.

I would only get the 4G93T if the halfcut was from a 1992/1993 Lancer GSR
(CD5A). Not from the Libretto Wagon, or whatever MPV etc. The CD5A is the
only one where EVERYTHING in the halfcut fits your Wira and you get all the
200hp advertised. Gearbox ratios are also more performance oriented.

Wah.. I didn't factor in the additional cost of the overhaul of the halfcut
engine. Hmm..now u got me thinking.

What about the famous Supercharger kit? How much power can I get from a
Supercharger? Would it be cheaper and less headache compared to engine
transplant?

What other NA mods can I do to get 180bhp?

sean,

thanks for the reply in other thread, i got the CD5W libero, just curious
here what's the difference between libero and lancer other than gearbox
(as in my case i jus dun care bout this coz i mix n match auto halfcut to
manual gb)? probably different ECU and what are the different
characteristics/specs on its ECU? different mapping?

from the halfcut front it's difficult if not impossible to tell libero or
lancer except the small mitsu engine steel plate within the engine
compartment, everything looks the same but maybe only for layman like
myself Blush since there's no way back jus wanna know the spec/performance
difference, to find out what i'm losing out and make additional
supplement....

if you do NA mods to your 1.8 4g93 NA to get 180bhp, you can forget about
driving it everyday, and expect reliability as well. The proper mods will
also probably cost you a bomb. RM10k will come and go easily.

The Libero has an EVO sized intercooler vs the puny one on the 1.8 GSR.
